Sofie Winterson & Benny Sings share single 'Image'
Image, with Benny Sings, is the first track from Sofie Winterson's album 'Southern Skies'. Out June 9th via Excelsior.
Where she has previously collaborated with internationally renowned artists like San Holo and Fatima Yamaha, this album was made with Benny Sings and continues where they left off after making the successful EP Moral. Benny Sings and Sofie were so happy with the collaboration that they wanted to continue making music together and this album is the result.
They liked that so much that more and more songs came and now there is an entire album. Southern Skies. An album about the passing of time, the desire for boredom, feeling powerless in the face of choices made by a good friend, about wanting to do something better or differently, about new encounters and thereby creating an image of another from your own experience. All this beautifully put to music by Sofie Winterson and Benny Sings. Together they went in search of the essence of the song. The compositions and arrangements fold themselves around the text and melody to get to the heart of the matter. They succeeded wonderfully.
Image is a delightful electronic indie track. Benny Sings' well-known swing combines fantastically with Sofie Winterson's sweet-voiced vocals. The song is about the image you make of another from your own world and experience. Image is a song in which two class musicians who have more than earned their spurs bring out the best in each other.
Sofie Winterson is a songwriter pur sang. Everything revolves around the song. The deft experimentalism of Arthur Russel, the frank and gold approach of songwriters like Big Thief and Elliot Smith, the atmospheric and sublime of bands like Beach House and Mazzy Star, as well as the accomplished pop music of Beyonce. All of these influences come together in Sofie Winterson's sound.
Sofie regularly appears on stage with post-punk supergroup MICH. And now, therefore, with Benny Sings. Whatever genre she touches, her gift for making heavy themes sound playful makes her songs instantly appealing.
