Sophie van Hasselt releases debut EP 'Eat My Brain'
The Amsterdam based indie-pop singer and songwriter Sophie van Hasselt releases her debut EP 'Eat My Brain' on February 4th. This EP is an introduction to different themes that are typical for a girl in her twenties. From layered vocals sounding like inner conversations to bouncing baselines, pulsating pads and quirky guitars playing in the background. Focus track 'Bad Trips' is about repeatedly getting into bad relationships. In the song she compares bad relationships to bad trips.
Sophie is an interdisciplinary artist who not only creates music, but also works in fashion photography and videography. The combination of these three expertises make her a unique creative mind. Sophie uses her DIY ethic and the 'reality shifting' aspect to remind us that life is as how you imagine it. Her music sounds like the 'Swinging Sixties' and a combination of artists such as Brigitte Bardot, Lily Allen and Beach Boy's 'Smiley Smile'.
“We build a tent out of blankets on top of my bed to recorded all my vocals. I really like this DIY approach. It triggers my creativity, to get a certain end result with what you have in front of you. Restrictions create creative solutions. The outcome will be surprising!" - Sophie van Hasselt
Her previously released singles have gathered more than 200.000 streams and got media attention from XITE, Dansende Beren, Frontview Magazine and DSCENE Magazine, a.o. Sophie recently starred in the Dutch T-Mobile campaign 'Ons Huis'. In 2021 she played live-sessions at Radio 3FM and Radio Veronica. In the past she has also worked with brands like Dante6, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue Thailand, De Bijenkorf and VICE.
“The EP is a reminder to not take life too serious. I like to shift my reality, life is really how you imagine it.” - Sophie van Hasselt
