super Florence jam Announce International Release of "We Always Knew It Would Come To This"!

Australian rock and roll quartet super FLORENCE jam have finally made it around to an international release of their music – a full 15 years after they first emerged onto the Australian live music scene as fresh-faced students. As part of the Bird’s Robe Records 10th anniversary series, the band’s second EP ‘We Always Knew It Would Come To This’ will also celebrate its 10th anniversary with an international release on CD & digital formats.

Originally released in 2011, the 9-track EP (it’s almost an album!) followed several demo CDs printed independently by the band and circulated at gigs around Sydney’s underground live music scene.

The EP earned the band their first airplay on triple j for the fiery punk rock track of ‘Irrepressible’ whilst also seeing the band embark on a series of headline shows at Sydney’s Gaelic Theatre, with their impressive live following rivalling many more mainstream artists.

Much like the band themselves, the EP sees them having fun with a series of musical experiments.

The hard rock blues of ‘Bloozepower’ and ‘Walkin’ On The Rocks’ unashamedly shows off the band’s Led Zeppelin influences, whilst the zany indie rock of ‘That’s The End of It’, ‘Anastasia Won’t You Sleep With Me’ and ‘Simmer Down’ sports their tongue-in-cheek take on mid-2000s indie rock. When these worlds collide, such as the epic anthem ‘Signals’ it shows off a band at their best. When things settle down for the balladry of ‘Your Word’ and ‘A Moment In Time’ it also shows a band capable of a myriad of dynamics.

Originally formed in 2005, super FLORENCE jam initially featured as a jam band side project, featuring in band competitions and busking on the street. Eventually writing proper songs, the band won the UNSW Band Comp in 2005, going all the way to the NSW State Finals, then placed 2nd in the Sydney University Band Comp in 2006 (to friends Cloud Control).

The band made their way in the Myspace era by busking twice weekly in Sydney’s Pitt St Mall and gigging relentlessly at legendary institutions across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Adelaide such as the Annandale Hotel, Metro Theatre, The Espy, The Lansdowne, Gaelic Theatre, Hopetourn Hotel, Excelsior Hotel, Club 77, Hermanns Bar, Manning Bar, Enigma Bar & The Hi Fi Bar (now Max Watts). They regularly performed over 100 times per year, playing to tens of thousands of people both in – and outside of – venues along the east coast.

In 2009, the band finally made their way into the studio with producer Clayton Segelov to refine their raw, progressive sound into a more concise and bombastic version of their material, releasing their debut ‘super FLORENCE jam.’

The response was surprisingly strong – over 2,000 copies sold, #1 on triple j radio’s Unearthed chart, MusicOz Award finalists and the DIY video clip for ‘Ghetto Project Fabulous’ proving a hit on ABC TV’s rage program. The success of the EP was the catalyst for the band’s first national tour in late 2009.

The band also scored supports with notable indie bands including British India, Airbourne, Dallas Crane, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Shihad, 28 Days, Bertie Blackman and Mental As Anything.

Though they were rarely supported with radio play (with only one spin on triple j across 7 years), the band nevertheless managed to fill hometown venues the Annandale Hotel & Gaelic Theatre to capacity at their raucous live shows, featuring extended versions of their songs, improvised jams & their infamous covers of Led Zeppelin tracks ‘Black Dog’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’

Though relatively dormant since a one-off reunion show in 2014, the band were instrumental (pun intended) in kickstarting the success of Sydney’s burgeoning progressive rock underground. The band headlined the first several shows by the newly formed Bird’s Robe, founded by Alex Tulett with drummer Mike Solo. Solo has since carried the label & management company on to work with ARIA-nominated & charting artists including sleepmakeswaves, We Lost The Sea, Closure in Moscow, The Crooked Fiddle Band, Toehider, Solkyri & more.

sFj have also notably supported charitable causes extensively since their inception, including performing concerts and fundraises for Hep C patients, famine relief, mental health awareness, youth centre and school music programs. In that vein, the band have also committed to donating a portion of proceeds from this year’s releases to a number of charities to be announced shortly.
