Teagan Johnston,returns with her new aptly titled single, Broken Bones, Country Roads.

 Today, Toronto’s multidisciplinary singer-songwriter and rock n’ roll staple, Teagan Johnston, returns with her new aptly titled single, Broken Bones, Country Roads. The three minute earworm leans into alt country territory while still maintaining Teagan’s unique sonic blend of singer songwriter, folk and indie/alt rock. With the release of the single today, Teagan also announces her sophomore record, Big Time, is due out October 2. Listen to Broken Bones, Country Roads here.

“I wrote Broken Bones, Country Roads while sitting alone in a hospital waiting room reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance while waiting for my ex boyfriend to get out of a complicated knee surgery,” explains Teagan. “I dealt with the anxiety of broken bones and an uncertain future by escaping into the fantasy of a carefree summer, spent on country roads. I’ve had what I call my ‘lucky PBR can’ in the back of my van for the past 10 years and I imagined just escaping the hospital and all other impending realities and just driving until my partners bones healed which lead to the lyric ‘Put you in the back of my van, next to the PBR can.’”

For the Broken Bones, Country Roads music video, which is also out today, Teagan teamed up with Bradley Pearson and Imogen J. Lister to create a mixed-media visual incorporating VHS, digital, and Super 8 film, serving as a full-circle moment with Pearson (who also directed the video for FMJ, the first single Teagan released from the Big Time collection). To bring the song's themes to life, Teagan and her band drove to her grandfather's home in Muskoka after a NXNE performance this past June and spent the next day travelling the area's country roads, back door rigged open, singing the song and capturing the experience on film.

Recorded at Sonic Ranch in Texas (Waxahatchee, Fiona Apple, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Broken Bones, Country Roads was, to say the least, a therapeutic writing exercise. Reading the opening of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, with its vivid descriptions of long summer rides down country roads, helped fuel the fantasy at the heart of the song, a form of escapism that offered comfort while processing the aftermath of a breakup. PBR caught wind of this story, and that combined with Teagan’s “lucky PBR can” lyric and hook, has lead to an exciting partnership where PBR has sponsored several shows, as well as the upcoming album release.

Big Time, officially due out October 2, is an album that revels in brevity and humour as much as it does its serious darker emotions, sharing with the listener a broad range of emotions felt through the human experience. Teagan wrote Big Time during a phase of her life when she took a step back from music, contemplating her future in the industry after living through her 20s and struggling to “hit the big time.” During the writing process Teagan reflected on and explored what actually hitting the “big time” meant to her. While in the search of this clarity, Teagan looked deep within and drew upon her own life experiences ranging from heartbreak to familial trauma, while laughing at the absurdity of life and being a young woman in the music industry.

Teagan’s band - Michele Galay, Skye Wallace, Jessica Lahey, and Thomas Kelly - have been by her side throughout the writing and recording of her upcoming album. Their friendship and unwavering support have been instrumental in Teagan’s growth, both as an artist and as a person. They stood with her through the heartbreak and difficult moments that inspired Broken Bones, Country Roads, making the song a testament not only to Teagan’s resilience, but also to the strength of the community that helped carry her through.

Throughout 2026 Teagan released the singles Neon Schoolgirl, My Luck, and Beat a Dead Horse, receiving critical acclaim from CBC Q, Exclaim!, and Sirius XM, among others.

Teagan Johnston is a multidisciplinary artist whose work focuses on emotional rawness and communication. Born in the Yukon, raised between South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the West Coast of Canada, Teagan brings a vast and ever layered perspective to her work.

Beginning her career as a musician under the name Little Coyote, Teagan’s debut album The Trouble with Teeth was released in October 2017 with the enthusiastic support of EggHunt Records. In 2019 Teagan acted in Canadian Indie Horror movie, The Strings. In addition to acting as the lead role in The Strings, Teagan also composed original music for the film. Outlets such as The New York Times, The A.V. Club, Bloody Disgusting and more have called Teagan’s performance and music in The Strings “commanding” and “magnetic.”

Teagan has directed music videos for Canadian artists such as Skye Wallace, Altered By Mom and 0Stella. She additionally wrote and directed her own short film, Flashblood, which premiered in 2023 in Toronto, ON and Brooklyn, NY.
