The Boxer Rebellion celebrate 'Last Of A Dying Breed' with their seventh album OUT NOW

Long-standing pioneers of artist independence and emotive, transatlantic alt-rock, The Boxer Rebellion have released their long-awaited first album in six years, The Second I’m Asleep. The four-piece shine a light on new single, Last Of A Dying Breed, a deeply reflective track that stands as an emotional cornerstone of the cathartic, timely and painstakingly produced seventh album.

Accompanying the release is a widescreen video filmed across the vast and weathered landscapes of Centennial and Laramie, Wyoming, locations that mirror the song’s themes of transition and quiet endurance. Featuring a local actor, who was revealed as a contributor to Nobel Peace Prize-winning climate change projects, part-fisherman and part-respected economist, the plot grew thick as the band and directors Ry and Drew Cox, got to work beneath endless blue skies.

Pushing forward with confident momentum, Last Of A Dying Breed grows tall from a relentless, bass-driven pulse that propels it onward before the relief of vast, atmospheric space brings peace. The result is a striking balance between forward motion and introspection, capturing both the urgency of time passing and the weight of what is left behind.

Where previous single, Satellite Above, cast a critical eye on digital noise and disruptive pressures of modern life, Last Of A Dying Breed spools forward to refocus again on what it is to be a human caught on the waves of time. This time, the lives, struggles and quiet dignity of an older generation navigating a rapidly shifting world.

Singer, Nathan Nicholson says: “I have always felt a great deal of respect and empathy for the older generation. They face many challenges in this modern life, including employment, technology, isolation, the erosion of values, lack of support, and of course deteriorating physical and mental health. On the one hand this song is in recognition of those hardships, and on the other a celebration of all they have taught us. One day we will all be....the Last of a Dying Breed.”

Carried by Nicholson’s unmistakable vocal, the song becomes both tribute and reckoning. As an album highlight and profound meditation on legacy, change, and the inevitable passing of time, the band’s signature emotional clarity and grand sense of scale needed visuals to match. With road movie scenes passing by the truck window, stolen glimpses of snow-capped mountains and an honest, solitary performance of pathos and empathy from polymath actor and singer-songwriter Jason Shogren, the film would be equally at home on the big screen as filing in alongside the band’s evolving catalogue of online cinematic work.

Director Ry Cox says: “We filmed in places that once had big industry from mining and railroad and now feel passed by. Jason was the most interesting person he had ever met. When we asked him if he would be comfortable acting he said he was gearing up to be on stage in a community theater production and really enjoyed acting. He has worn many hats in his life. Aside from being a singer-songwriter and music festival organiser, he is also a keen fisherman and leading economist, whose work has informed climate change policy at the very highest levels.

Besides advising world leaders, he also contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. We loved the life and nuance he brought to the character.”
