The Lathums release heartbreak hymn 'Turmoil'

Personal growth meets the giant, musical strides of The Lathums as the deepest, brightest and most baffling mysteries of the heart get their full attention with the blossoming, dark beauty of Turmoil – the latest track to be drawn from their upcoming, second album, From Nothing To A Little Bit More. Exploring the upsides, flipsides and broadsides of love, the unfurling, piano-led study on falling head over heels soundtracks both butterfly-in-stomach relationship beginnings and stomach-churning ends.

In a first for The Lathums, the accompanying video features singer and songwriter, Alex Moore's beloved dog, George sharing the spotlight with his master.

Launching the follow up to their 2021, chart-topping debut album at the end of October with the grizzled, visceral anthem centred on handling personal loss, Say My Name, The Lathums opened up to say that their second album would be ‘an act of rebellion, having seen the rules of the game’. No more is that evident than on Turmoil as the less-compromising three-piece demand more of themselves and unapologetically make most use of the tools left at their disposal.

Entering the studio in early 2021 with Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys, Bombay Bicycle Club) and recognising the limitations they had previously imposed on themselves through endearing naivety, songs such as Turmoil were treated to the kinds of enriching augmentation, in this case intricate piano lines and cinematic orchestration, they’d innocently overlooked first time around.

By including Turmoil amongst an album running order that includes every relationship stage, not least the yearning loneliness of fan-favourite, Crying Out, Moore, recognises and explains the developing narrative, saying: “I’ve only had like one proper girlfriend and it’s definitely like three different steps all in one album. Pre, during, and post-relationship. All of them are horrible.”

A step away from the deep, lyrical content, guitarist, Scott Concepcion directs attention towards the band’s growing technical prowess, saying: “I’ve developed a better understanding of all the different instruments now. I did the full take of ‘Turmoil’ on the piano after a trained, classical pianist had shown me the arrangement.”

Confirmed for release on Fri 24 February 2023 on Island Records, The Lathums’ follow up to their hugely successful, 2021 debut album How Beautiful Life Can Be arrives just before the band head out on tour to some of the most prestigious venues they’ve played to date. Including a landmark date at London’s Roundhouse and a ‘homecoming’ at Manchester’s ornate Albert Hall, the full UK Tour follows a run of special, incredibly intimate pub dates announced just last week.
