The Lounge Kittens are ready to record a debut album!

by Els Verhaeren

The past year we’ve visited a lot of concerts and festivals for Frontview Magazine. Headline shows are often the ones you know best, but many times there are some very nice surprises. So were the three girls from The Lounge Kittens. The Lounge Kittens are Jen (red), Timia (blue) en Zan (pink) and they bring you the best rock and metal songs in their own special way. This colourful trio from Southampton (UK) can set the place on fire. When you get the first glimpse of these ladies you’ll probably think “What is this and what are they doing with my favourite heavy music?!”, but when you give this a chance you’ll see you’re in for a night full of fun, laughter and good music! A night or even a afternoon, ‘cause The Lounge Kittens got the Classic Rock tent all for themselves at Graspop Metal Meeting this summer and that’s where Frontview Magazine got to meet these extraordinary lovely ladies...

FVM: I saw you guys, oh sorry, you girls...

TLK: that’s allright, we answer to guys as well! (Laughing)

FVM: ...for the first time as support of Steel Panther, and I totally loved it.

TLK: oh yeah, thank you!

FVM: It was really great! How did you come up with the idea to mingle ‘Andrew Sisters’ with metal and Hard Rock?

TLK (Red): Well we all just wanted to do something outside sort of regular work. That was musical, that was fun and we’re all sort of die hard metal and rock fans. Actually, it’s kind of fun to swear in harmony. And the position of seeing something pretty against something that can be quite heavy, the transformation of it

TLK(blue): it’s funny yeah, if we get up there looking like this and sounding like we do and we just go like “F*ck You M*therF*cker!” it’s just funny!

FVM: Did you do something together before you were The Lounge Kittens?

TLK (pink): We’ve met through Jen, how leads choirs for a living, that’s how I’ve met the girls, so we’ve been singing together as a choir with all our members for five years now.

(blue): I met Jen in university about like 6, 7 years ago. We were both cast in the same show, so I’ve always known Jen through singing.

FVM: How do you decide which songs to play?

TLK: (together) The one’s we like!

(red): always songs that we love first en foremost. I mean sometimes it depends on the situation. We’ve made a medley, that we made especially for Download Festival, it features a lot of the bands that are playing at the festival. Most of them our playing here as well so we can play it here at Graspop also, it has In Flames and Kiss and everything. So sometimes we do them for specific events but they are still made of the songs that we really really like.

(pink): Sometimes fans can misunderstand what we are doing but we only do things that we love and we honouring the original artists. Sometimes people think we’re mocking them, but we are really not, we’re honouring!

FVM: The crowd just totally loved you, they we’re like ‘wow’ and singing along...

TLK(red): Yeah, that was amazing, I’m on such a high after that! We really didn’t expect that many of people to come in through the tent and... we like to do shows like in a bar, because people come in anyway and then they recognize the songs and they attend to stay... but they came in today to see us and stayed, which is absolutely just so humbling and lovely... We’ve only played in Belgium once and...

FVM: I think that one time as support act for Steel Panther was the best promotion you could have...

TLK : We know and we’re so grateful and had so much fun on that tour!

FVM: Did you get some feedback from bands whose songs you play?

TLK: Yeah, that’s kind of how it all took off, we released the ‘Rolling’ video and Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) got in touch and was like “I really like the video” and he got us on stage with Limp Bizkit at Sonisphere last year in the UK and same with Steel Panther. We’ve send them what we do and they absolutely loved it. They loved our version of ‘Glory Hole’. Corey Taylor got in touch about our cover of ‘Duality’ and said he really likes it.

FVM: The music, the medleys, do you change it yourselves?

TLK (pink): yeah, we do everything ourselves, the blue and the red one do all the music arrangements and they are incredibly good at it.

(red): our arrangements are getting more and more challenging, more and more difficult to sing and challenging us to be better and that’s really cool!

FVM: So you are three women in a men’s world, how is that?

TLK: It’s bloody great!! (laughing all together) It’s been very good to us!

(red) We are not really very girlie girls, so... (blue) we are very at home here

(pink) It surprises us though that people are so protective of us, and the fans as well ... people are very protective of ‘their’ kittens (smiling) not in a patronising way either, more in a respecting kind of way

(red) not in a ‘you’re girls an can’t look after yourselves’ kind of way, they just want to help us, which is lovely.

FVM: Do you have something what you really want to do with the Lounge Kittens? A dream?

TLK: well, it’s pretty good as it is, we’re already doing it!

(pink)we always say that the things that we’re doing now are the thing we wouldn’t dare to dream would happen. We never expected to be on stage with Limp Bizkit, we never expected to be on tour with Steel Panther, we never expected to playing festivals across the world... we’re living the dream... what else should we do?...

(blue) fly to the moon?...

(red) I think we would really like to go to America (blue) and Japan!

(red) and see that it could take the kittens to see more of the world... That would be fun!

I would like to go back in to Europe and do some smaller shows of our own and see what happens. We’re going to start working on our album soon so that’s quite a big thing for me to have a whole album.

FVM: Have you got any idea when the album will be released?

TLK (red): we’re gonna start in summer, so it’s gonna to be early next year at the earliest!

FVM: So maybe will see you next year on the big stage!? I would think you would cheer up that crowd...

TLK(blue): I like to cheer people up. That’s a lot of what we do it seems to be at festivals. Especially a metal festival where there is a lot of heavy music and it’s very much like ‘ggroohhw’ (makes a grumbling sound) it’s very intense! And sometimes it’s nice to just have a break for like 45 minutes and come see some three people just having... have a giggle, let of some steam, have a bit of a smile, sing along, have a bit of a laugh and then “ahh, I ready for the pit again now!”

FVM: So, We’re really looking forward to your album!

TLK (pink): So do we! We have no idea what will be on it, we haven’t decide it yet! We’ll go in the studio, record some and we’ll see what comes out of it. There will be some surprises I think.

A debut album for The Lounge Kittens that will be something to look forward too, so stay tuned on Frontview Magazine! We’ll keep you posted!
