The Song Behind Apple's Biggest AirPods Mystery

The Song Behind Apple's Biggest AirPods Mystery

Apple's latest AirPods campaign featuring football superstar Vinícius Jr. captivated audiences by withholding one key element: the music. The creative rollout ignited widespread conversation across social media as fans searched for the mystery song behind Vini's infectious dance moves, culminating in Apple's release of an extended Music Edit featuring Yttling Jazz, Joshua Idehen & Saturday, Monday's "Illegal Hit (Edit)."

Released globally during the height of the FIFA World Cup, Apple's original 30-second spot, titled "Dança," took an unconventional approach. Rather than introducing viewers to the music driving Vinícius Jr.'s dance through city streets, the commercial featured only the sounds of the surrounding world showcasing AirPods Pro's Active Noise Cancellation.

The creative decision quickly transformed the campaign into a worldwide guessing game. Fans across TikTok, Instagram, X, Reddit, and YouTube began creating their own edits of the commercial, pairing Vinícius Jr.'s choreography with songs spanning every genre imaginable in an attempt to identify or reinvent the mystery soundtrack. Apple continued fueling the moment with alternate musical versions of the campaign before revealing the official track.

With the official soundtrack now unveiled, Yttling Jazz, Joshua Idehen & Saturday, Monday's "Illegal Hit (Edit)" has emerged as the musical centerpiece of a campaign that captivated audiences worldwide, introducing Yttling Jazz's work to millions through one of the year's most creative and culturally resonant advertising moments.

"It’s lovely when a tune gets a life of its own and finds a different way out in the world. The song 'Illegal Hit' has taken a lot of different forms but Joshua’s lyrics is as world class as Vinicius Junior in my opinion."

— Yttling Jazz's Bjorn Yttling

"We are over the moon to be a part of this campaign, not least because we get to tell our kids we were the soundtrack to the most popular footballer in the world dancing. Also, we're Apple users and we hope we get free earbuds down the line" — Joshua Idehen and Saturday, Monday

"Illegal Hit (Edit)" was released as a stand alone single as well as one of the featured tracks on an expanded version of the LP - Illegal Hit (Out of Bounds) - released earlier this year.

After nearly two decades in London’s poetry scene, Joshua Idehen broke through globally with the viral success of "Mum Does The Washing." That momentum led to sold-out shows throw out Europe and UK, major festival appearances including Glastonbury. He is now riding the success of his acclaimed album I Know You’re Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try, created with Ludvig Parment (Saturday, Monday). Blending poetry, electronic music, and themes of healing, hope, and resilience, the album has marked a major new chapter in Idehen’s career.

Yttling Jazz's Björn Yttling is the writer and producer who for decades has done work across pop, indie, and alternative music with artists including Lykke Li, Robyn, Franz Ferdinand, Primal Scream, Chrissie Hynde, First Aid Kit, The Hives, Sarah Blasko, and many others. Most recently, Björn co-wrote and produced six tracks on Lykke Li's acclaimed new album The Afterparty including the single "Lucky Again."

Björn is also one-third of the beloved Swedish indie-pop trio Peter Bjorn and John. This August, the band celebrates the 20 year annivesary of its semenal album, Writer's Block, which introduced the world to the irresistibly catch, whistle-driven indie anthem "Young Folks" - a song that remains a staple more than two decades later. You can catch Bjorn on tour with Peter Bjorn and John in the US this fall.
