This vinyl record is made from 2020 newspapers

Bad news. We all had plenty of it this year. The music scene as well: canceled shows and festivals, closed venues and lost incomes. It meant a great deal of suffering for a lot of people. Not only for the artists, but also for everyone working in the music scene: Research from SABAM shows that the Belgian Music Scene notes down a loss of 41 million euros compared to Q1 in 2019.

But, even when times are rough, there’s always good news that the end of the tunnel: As more and more people are getting vaccinated, the music scene is bound to reopen soon. To celebrate this, N..E.W.S. created a limited edition vinyl record that can function as the soundtrack of the liberation: Bad News. Good News. . A limited edition vinyl record, made with newspapers from 2020. The record is available in your local record store as from the 12th of June, on International Record Store Day.

Bad times are fertile ground for great music

The record itself is made from the ashes of newspapers and magazines containing the bad news that hit the music industry in 2020 (and prevented artists from performing live). The ashes were injected into pulp and served as the basis for the vinyl. As a metaphor that great music always survives bad news, no matter how desperate things can get. “The one good thing about bad times is that they open new perspectives on things you’ve grown accustomed to, and that is exactly our core business as artists: comforting during challenging times; challenging during comfortable times and finding new ways to look at old things.” says Johannes Genard, lead singer of School is Cool who is also featured on the record.
