United Airlines Celebrates Girls in Aviation Day at Brussels Airport

To celebrate Girls in Aviation Day, United Airlines has offered an unforgettable experience to 14 girls through a tour of its operations at Brussels Airport, showcasing the endless career opportunities available in the aviation sector. The young students were selected from Toekomst Atelier Del Avenir (TADA), a non-profit organisation and learning network that supports the emancipation of young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

On this special day, hosted by United Airlines and Brussels Airport, participants had the opportunity to learn about what happens behind the scenes at the airport. The girls explored key areas, including check-in, pre-boarding and boarding, and enjoyed a guided tour of ramp operations, finding out more about cargo loading, catering, baggage handling and aircraft preparation, and also visits to both United’s technical operations base and Brussels Airport’s Stand and Gate Control Centre. Their excitement grew as they watched a United plane land on the main runway and stepped on board a state-of-the-art Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft, marvelling at the scale and complexity of the operation. Highlights of the day included the opportunity to visit the cockpit, as well as hear from inspiring women leaders, from a United pilot to United’s HR managers, who shared their career stories and invaluable advice, sparking a sense of possibility and empowerment in the group.

“Aviation is one of the most exciting industries to be part of,” said Nele De Roeck, Supervisor Airport Operations Belgium, United Airlines. “This initiative is all about inspiring future aviation leaders by sparking their interest in STEM, introducing them to role models and highlighting the many career paths our industry offers. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm on full display throughout the action-packed day at Brussels Airport.”

Since 2016, uIMPACT, United Airlines’ Business Resource Group for empowering women and their allies, has partnered with Women in Aviation International (WAI), a nonprofit organisation dedicated to inspiring women and girls to pursue careers in aviation and aerospace. Thanks to this partnership, United has organised events, such as the one held in Brussels, to impact girls and motivate them to pursue careers in the airline industry.
