Vintage Culture goes dancehall on new EP 'SELEKTA'
Vintage Culture returns with “SELEKTA”, a two-track EP made with DJ and producer Kevin Brauer and out today through Affairs Music, Vintage Culture's own creative imprint. The title track features Hackney-born MC Tuggawar, whose vocals give the record its hook and its name.
Across the two tracks titled “SELEKTA” and “Yoga”, Vintage Culture and Brauer bring dancehall and reggae-influenced elements into contemporary electronic production. The tracks share a similar mood and musical character, forming a cohesive EP rather than presenting opposing sides of the collaboration. Heavy, controlled house production leaves space for Tuggawar's recurring call: "Tell the SELEKTA, turn up the bass." His delivery moves between full lines, direct commands and clipped phrases until the vocal sits inside the arrangement rather than on top of it.
For all the weight in the production, the track stays playful. The hook and the loose reggae swing let it move between house, dancehall and sound-system territory without settling into any one of them. It is built to travel: direct enough for a festival crowd, controlled enough for the club.
“Yoga” continues in the same world, with reggae and dancehall-tinged elements over a driving electronic foundation. Heard together, the two tracks make a focused club release connected by rhythm, vocal character and a shared sense of movement, an EP rather than two opposing sides of a collaboration.
“SELEKTA” is one of Vintage Culture's clearest engagements with dancehall and reggae to date. Rather than stepping away from the house foundations that define his work, he uses those influences to introduce a different rhythmic character and a more playful vocal energy. The production stays lean throughout: the bass carries the weight, the percussion holds the momentum, and the vocals give each track its identity.
Tuggawar brings a distinct history to the title track. Born and raised in Hackney, England, he developed his delivery during several formative years in Jamaica in the early 2000s. His work has since moved between dancehall, hip-hop and drum and bass, including “Bazooka,” his collaboration with Jappa, which has surpassed one million Spotify streams. On “SELEKTA,” that background is condensed into a direct and playful performance built into the record's structure.
For Kevin Brauer, the EP introduces another chapter in a career best known through his work as Sevenn, the artist project behind records including “BOOM” with Tiësto and ‘The Wall’ with Alok. His work under his own name places greater emphasis on rhythm, tension and detailed club production, while Sevenn continues as a separate creative outlet.
