Vox Rea releases Hard

Vox Rea is the brainchild of sisters Kate and Lauren Kurdyak, who first made waves as The Katherines with their 2017 debut album, To Bring You My Heart (604 Records). The album earned over a million Spotify streams, landed on high-profile playlists like New Music Friday and Hot Hits Canada, and was featured in TV shows like Orphan Black and The Order. After a hiatus to study philosophy, the duo re-emerged in 2020 as Vox Rea, a name that symbolizes their reclamation of creative control and departure from the “girl band” label. Their noir-pop sound—marked by lush string arrangements, layered harmonies, and introspective lyrics—explores themes of addiction, self-doubt, independence, and grief. Their self-titled album was crafted with Luca Fogale, Begonia, Joël, and producers Connor Seidel, Tim Buron, Derek Hoffman, and Joel Stouffer. Since their first single, “Dose Me Up”, they’ve amassed 700k Spotify streams, been featured on CBC and British Columbia radio, and had their track “Damn (Unstuck)” land on Spotify’s Top Folk Songs of 2021.

Beyond music, Vox Rea operates like an artist collective, directing their own videos and short films while collaborating on a merchandise line with Dutch artist Maud van Baar de Knegt. Their immersive artistry has taken them to major festivals across the UK, Europe, and North America, including SXSW, The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, and Treefort Music Fest. In 2022, they received industry recognition with CreativeBC’s Career Development Grant, Canada Council’s Research & Creation Grant, and selection for RBCxMusic’s First Up Program. They’ve also partnered with brands like Field House Brewing, Huha, Charlie Beads, and Lost Goodz. At its core, Vox Rea is more than just music—it’s an artistic movement, a rejection of commercial conformity, and a testament to the power of self-expression.
