Wild Pink Releases "Dulling the Horns" Title Track/Lyric Video

On October 4th, Wild Pink will release their 5th LP, Dulling The Horns, their first album on Fire Talk Records. The band have been riding a long crescendo of critical praise since the release of their self-titled 2017 debut, and the buzz around the band reached a new peak with the release of their last LP, 2022's ILYSM. A powerful record about the band's leader John Ross being diagnosed and treated for cancer, and was their most critically-acclaimed release to date, attracting attention from spots like The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, New York Magazine and Billboard among many others, while seeing the band make their network TV debut on CBS Saturday.

A little over a week from it's release Dulling The Horns is already generating excitement, with a growing consensus that it may be a new high point in the band's career, and today Ross and co are sharing a final preview of the album in the form of its title track "Dulling The Horns."

After the “digital lacquer” of the band's 2021 LP A Billion Little Lights, Ross had already wanted ILYSM to be more organic and human. But Dulling The Horns takes that prompt further in every way. There will still be occasional synth plinks, sax drones, pedal steel courtesy of frequent collaborator Mike “Slo Mo” Brenner, and even a bit of fiddle. But otherwise, Dulling The Horns is coarse, lived-in, visceral — music intended to be played live, with pounding rhythms and guitars bleeding all over. “I wanted to make economical songs,” Ross explains. “Music that is very much at its core three or four people rocking.” If before, Wild Pink took notes from Springsteen and Petty, they’ve now entered their Crazy Horse era.

This is exemplified by the title track, which incorporates some elements of the thunderous Jesu-adjacent production that has featured in the band's recent catalog, but is distinct in the sparse moments of its arrangement.

Ross says of the song: "This song came together in like an hour or two, way faster than any of the others on the record which is pretty rare for me. It was one of the last songs I wrote for the album and naming the record after it felt like the right thing to do. I think it’s basically a song about moving on."
