Alberta Cross reveals the next cut from the forthcoming collaborative album The Thief And The Heartbreaker (Re-Imagined)’. Joining forces with Brooklyn singer songwriter Arum Rae, they revisit It’s You That’s Changing a track that originally featured on their 2007 debut LP, yet feels just as relevant in modern times, navigating feelings of helplessness and overwhelm due to world events that are out of our control.

Alberta Cross vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee comments on the track and collaboration, “This song has always been a special one to me. One of those songs that just feels like one of the strongest ones I’ve written and in New York City it was always a favourite with the musicians at our jams. 'It's You That's Changing' is a song about feeling overwhelmed by the harshness of the world and how it all affects us, and how we handle it on a daily basis. And in this case also how it affects a relationship. It's incredible to have Arum Rae sing on it. I first met Arum when we were recording our second record ‘Broken Side Of Time’ In Austin, Texas. Our producer at the time kept raving about her in the studio and when we finally heard her sing we all agreed she was very special. She felt like an old soul in a young body. Nina Simone and Billie Holiday vibes. Arum eventually moved to NYC where we all lived for many years so she joined our beautiful music community there and often sang at our secret late night jams in the East and West Village. She most likely sang this song with me back then but we were probably too tipsy then to remember it now. She recorded these vocals beautifully with the help of my dear buddy Mark Watrous (The Shins, The Raconteurs & Earl Burrows) in his awesome studio in Nashville, Tennessee”.

Arum Rae adds, “Since our time living and playing music together in NYC, I have always been a fan of Alberta Cross. Was so psyched to sing on “It’s You That’s Changing” especially recording it with Mark Watrous. Super inspiring collaboration to be a part of”. The track features on upcoming album The Thief And The Heartbreaker (Re-Imagined)which is due for release on 22 November via Dark Matter/Austral Media with Kartel Music Group. A new take on Alberta Cross’s debut, which set the foundation for their Americana-tinged indie and alternative sound, the re-imagined album hosts a wealth of musical collaborations from friends. Re-recorded in Frome, Somerset, at Ethan John and Dom Monks (Big Thief) Bert Jansch studio, the release was self-produced by Alberta Cross vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee, and mastered at the hallowed Abbey Road Studios with 360 Mastering.

Across the album, there’s a wealth of contributions and appearances from musicians that crossed paths with Alberta Cross over the course of their two decade long career Katie Melua, Jack Savoretti, Dylan Le Blanc, Tomas Andersson, Ed Harcourt & more’. Their re-works honour the original whilst breathing new life into each track. A lot has changed over the past two decades, but it’s clear from ‘The Thief And The Heartbreaker (Re-Imagined) that Alberta Cross’s songwriting and debut release remain timeless.

Originally released in 2007 as a collection of self produced demos, Alberta Cross’s ‘The Thief and The Heartbreaker’ set the blueprint of their sound. “It felt so great writing those songs” recalls Petter.Wherever I play in the world, I still have to play them. It felt so pure, it was one of the most exciting times I’ve had as a songwriter”.

What followed was success on both sides of the Atlantic and the relentless grind of US touring that comes with it. They embarked on high-profile jaunts with Mumford & Sons, Portugal. The Man, Neil Young, Them Crooked Vultures and Rag N’ Bone Man and performed on distinguished TV shows around the globe, appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman, Last Call with Carson Daly and more, whilst their tracks were featured on hit TV shows such as Million Little Pieces, Sons Of Anarchy and Californication.

More recently, 2023 saw the release of Alberta Cross’s most recent album Sinking Ships’, establishing their music as vital as ever. It was supported by the likes of Billboard, Clash, Rolling Stone, and NPR
