Hungarian experimental quintet Shell Beach have unveiled a cover of 90s hit single ‘Olyan Szépek Voltunk’ (We Were So Beautiful) by Tamás Somló (Omega, Locomotiv GT) - father of guitarist Pali Somló. The track is taken from the band's new album Solar Flare, released last month via Wild Thing Records. Filmed on 35mm film, the video directed by Sébastien Praznoczy has a beautiful cinematic narrative. Watch here: https://youtu.be/pSdRXe6Erlc

Vocalist / guitarist Pali Somló comments: "I had the idea for the song about ten years ago. I had a favourite acoustic guitar at my father's place, and when I went over, I always played it. Once I was curled up on the couch strumming the chords of Deftones' Be 'Quite And Drive' when I heard the harmony of 'We Were So Beautiful'. From then on, the idea that we could do the song in our own style floated around in my head for years. In the meantime, unfortunately, my father passed away, and the band and I started working on Solar Flare. That's when it made sense to do this track.

"We have never sung in Hungarian, and I am not the lead singer of the band, but we made an exception in the case of 'We Were So Beautiful'. I love this track, it brings back so many beautiful memories and it's a chilling experience every time I play it. I think it became a highlight of the record."

Director Sébastien Praznoczy comments: "I was very moved when Pali told me that he had covered one of his father's songs. Although Tamás and Pali lived in different musical worlds, this track still nicely connects their relationship to music. With the fact that the song got a punkier, more hardcore sound, it only conveys the emotions even more strongly. Coming up with the concept of the clip was a long process, we wrote at least three different scenarios before we decided on the version shot on 35 mm. I always felt that love clips were clichéd, so I wanted to show that love is also friendship. Wrestling is a good allegory for this: it is not clear what is between the parties, there is also passion and love, the two guys develop together, even if life sometimes takes them in different directions.

"The video also features Robert Adamek, who was a very close friend of both me and the members of the band, and who died tragically shortly after filming. I already cut the clip in such a way that I found out overnight that Robert was no longer there. This affected the whole process and gave the music a new meaning. We dedicate this clip to his memory."
