Norwegian psych-electro-rock duo Nonne releases their new single Lar dæ gå today. Lar dæ gå is a song that fuses the Nordic singer/songwriter tradition, acid house, breakbeats, soul and a concept of playing yourself into a trance state. The band is playing at ESNS in Groningen this weekend.
Gustav Eidsvik and Erlend Skotnes met during their teenage years and soon became friends by playing together in various bands, including hardcore band Feskekrok and indie rock band Great People, where they played bass and drums. While living together in 2019, one of them thought it would be exciting to see what a band with just the two of them would sound like, and Nonne was born. After first writing songs in English, everything fell into place when they translated one of their songs into their Northern Norwegian dialect and started writing in their native tongue. The adventurous duo sing polar love songs in a baggy style and have since established themselves as one of Norway's most exciting acts.
Their debut album Omf! (2023 - which includes the song Ikke Normal, see video below), gave the duo momentum in their home country and saw them play at some of Norway's biggest festivals that same year. A week after the release of their debut, the boys set out to record new music in the basement of an old house deep in the northern Norwegian countryside of Bø i Vesterålen. Lar dæ gå is the result of that recording session and means something like ‘Let you go’. The song was created after the band moved back to their hometown of Tromsø, after living in the Norwegian capital Oslo for three years. Coming home again meant facing the demons they ran away from. “For us, it's about letting yourself and the people around you do their own thing. At the time of the recording, we were inspired by the concept of ‘rammeslått’ from Norwegian folk music-a type of song that has an ecstatic or demonic character that would often spellbind the performer to a point where he/she could not stop playing until someone would cut the strings of the instrument.” - says Gustav Eidsvik
Nonne are known for their pulsating live shows with tight and spontaneous performances. Take themselves seriously, but not always. Nonne draws lines between sexy grooves, repetitive riffs, tropical percussion and punchy synths. All this with mysterious, melancholic and hopeful melodies on top. Following their homeland, the band is ready to conquer the rest of the world with their innovative, monotonous yet varied sound.
Nonne live at Eurosonic (ESNS) on Friday 17 January
