Amber en Marie from Kids With Buns share their story and repertoire in tonight's episode of 'Liefde Voor Muziek'

After six episodes, it's finally Kids With Buns turn to take the spotlight in tonight's episode of 'Liefde Voor Muziek'. The duo, consisting of Marie Van Uytvanck and Amber Piddington, moves the audience tonight with both their music and their story. “They have something magical,” says Luc Steeno. “To know so clearly what you want at such a young age? I hope they blow up and make it big,” adds Barbara Dex.

One of their most important songs is Nothing New, which tells the story of their shared coming-out experience. “It didn’t go well. We were both outed by others at a time when we weren’t ready at all,” Marie explains. As artists, they later decided to take control of their own narrative. “We made a very conscious choice to speak openly about our sexuality,” says Amber. “When we were growing up, we didn’t have any role models. We want to change that.”

The artist whose musical genre is furthest from the duo’s style, Luc Steeno, takes on Nothing New and brings a special guest along. “Let’s go back to 1992, because since then, I haven’t sung a song with an accordion. Recently, I’ve been mentoring a young guy who wants to sing schlager, and I invited him here today.”

Guus chooses to perform Bad Grades, transforming it into a warm, parental message. “I have kids your age, and they sometimes go through rough patches too,” Guus explains. “As a parent, you can feel powerless because you don’t have many tools to make things better. So you often end up relying on clichés—and one of those clichés is going to sing to you now.”

Frank Vander linden also draws inspiration from his role as a father and reworks Daughter into a letter to his daughter. “The song is about how you're constantly negotiating with your children,” Frank explains. “And maybe that child is right too. As parents, we’ve also pushed back at times.”

Barbara Dex manages to move the duo with her version of What Happens In Your Brain. “The song took on a new meaning when a fan told us they had recently lost someone and that it meant a lot to them,” Marie shares.

Geike Arnaert, Alex Callier, and Raymond Geerts bring Clutter back to the trip-hop roots of Hooverphonic. “It felt like it was written just for me,” says Geike. “We thought the lyrics were perfect as they were, so we decided: let’s catapult this song back to the early days of our career.”

Maksim chooses Stubborn Mind, the most pop-oriented song by Kids With Buns, and shows a different side of himself. “I’m super poppy, so I thought: maybe I should pull it more toward your style?” Maksim laughs.

For their own cover, Marie and Amber select In Charleroi by Tom Pintens, someone they had the chance to work with. “It’s so surreal to realize I used to listen to that song with my dad on the way to school,” says Marie, “and that I’d later get to work with the person who wrote it.”
