Big Truck Will Release Their Debut Album "Midday At The Middleway" On August 28 - Featuring The New Single "Collided"

Big Truck ignited a wave of discovery and anticipation when they released their debut single, ‘Central Reservation Blues’, in April. The band - Laurie Vincent (Soft Play), Sam Coppin (Lady Bird), Asa Thallon and Justin Myles - earned support across the board, including Kerrang!, NME, The Line of Best Fit and Radio 2 - while subsequent gigs included a gig at The Great Escape which had some many people queuing outside the venue could’ve been filled twice over.

Now Big Truck build upon their growing reputation with the news that they will release their debut album ‘Midday At The Middleway’ on August 28th via Marshall Records. They launch the album alongside their second single ‘Collided’, which was premiered yesterday by Steve Lamacq on 6 Music.

Recorded in just four days of vibrantly immediate sessions at Marshall Studio, ‘Midday at the Middleway’ lives up to its potential. Laurie’s abstract pop songwriting is informed by a wealth of scattergun influences: The Cure, The Smiths, The War On Drugs, Sam Fender, The Breeders and Joeyfat. It is heightened by his bandmates talents - Sam’s jazz-tinged drumming, Asa’s background as a metal guitarist, and keyboardist Justin’s stellar R&B and soul musicianship.

The final engaging touch is Laurie’s lyrics. Sometimes confessional, sometimes witty, sometimes philosophical and sometimes just plain matter-of-fact: they provide a yin-and-yang pull between appreciating what’s good in life and accepting that things can be a bit shit.

‘Collided’ is a standout moment from the upcoming album. It’s a waltz-like post-punk groove, with a seasick wooziness that’s countered by irresistible melodic streak and alluring contributions from each band member: flourishes of Hammond organ, jazz-tinged drum patterns, and fluid lead guitar. Laurie Vincent’s voice possesses a tense urgency as he expresses an emotional unfurling that flows from claustrophobia to release.

Laurie says, “‘Collided’ is one of my favourite songs on the record. My musicianship is quite untrained, and I didn’t even realise I was writing it in 6/8 time. That’s the kind of stuff that’s been allowed to shine on this record, because it’s a full band and Sam’s jazz background helps those moments to work.”

Sam adds, “‘Collided’ has this quality that I think is a snapshot into how good Laurie is. It scratches the surface of what he is going to reveal as a result of this project.”

The song’s journey is reflected in its imaginative video. First, Laurie paces around a prison-like box like a tiger frustrated in its cage, but later it becomes a sanctuary as he’s joined by a baby. The stark black-and-white photography also features the band, detached in the box, but united in their performance outside of it. The video was directed by Jude Harrison, with the concept and art design by Laurie.
