Chatterton share new EP 'Tiny Empire' via 7th Heaven

Indie rock duo Chatterton are excited to share their new EP, Tiny Empire, available everywhere now, via 7th Heaven. The follow-up to 2024’s critically acclaimed Fields of This, today’s EP offers shimmering riffs, stab-to-the-heart lyrics, wandering saxophones and trumpets, and a bit of grit to match the polished production. The Oxnard, CA-based duo, consisting of Brock Pierce and Logan Scrivner, tell it like it is while providing lush soundscapes for their confessions.

“We didn’t really go into this planning to do an EP. It just kind of ended up happening like that,” Pierce says. “We originally went into these sessions just to record our next album but found ourselves just recording everything. Kind of just trying to strike the iron while it’s hot and keep things fresh. By the end of it, we were left us with a lot of songs with nowhere to go. We felt like a few of them fit together nicely but not quite enough to compile for a release. So we decided to go back and book more studio time to record a few additional songs to round it out. We really had no idea what [Tiny Empire] was gonna end up being and if it would even be released. I think it worked out better like that in the end.“

“To me, Tiny Empire feels like a very natural progression from our previous release, and I think a lot of that is rooted in the very openly collaborative approach that we took,” Scrivener continues. “We were both very involved in every step of the process, but have really learned how to give each other the space to be creative this time around. I find that this reflects in the arrangements and song structures. Having the privilege of working with very talented session players and doing the work across multiple studios gave it a depth that we weren’t really anticipating going in.”

Earlier this month, Chatterton shared the closing track of the EP, “Blouse,” which is filled with crescendoing bossa nova-inspired instrumentals and shimmering vocals. Along with an official music video, “Blouse” waltzes its listener with biting lyricism and saultering brass solos. The track arrived with an official music video, featuring bandleaders Brock Pierce and Logan Scrivner performing “Blouse” at a florist and their subsequent floral-filled journey and fight. Filmed around suburban Southern California strip malls and parks, the video for the single captures Chatterton’s ability to infuse levity into emotional entanglements.

Last year, Chatterton released their sophomore album, Fields of This, which was met with critical acclaim from Pitchfork, UPROXX, Bandcamp Daily, and more. A towering collection of songs, the record was a culmination of years of writing and recording, exploring various influences through airtight melodies and whirling guitars. In the words of Nina Corcoran for Pitchfork, “[Fields Of This] is brash yet diffident. From the lo-fi romance of “Pretty Things” to the testy ’90s emo of “Lakewood,” Chatterton are all mood and momentum.”

A fixture of Southern California’s indie scene, Chatterton has played shows with julie, Slow Hollows, Sign Crushes Motorist, Midrift and more. Last year, the band embarked on a sprawling North American tour, and more recently, they supported indie favorites Coma Cinema and English Teacher at their respective Los Angeles shows.
