Ethan Gold shares videos for his 2 singles

Songwriter, performer, and composer Ethan Gold is rewarding those waiting for a new album of songs with a trilogy of LPs about our alienation and inter-connectedness, Earth City. The first album Earth City 1: The Longing arrives May 14th, with two other parts to follow in 2022.

2 weeks ago saw the release of not 1 but 2 singles from the new album and today Ethan shares the videos for those singles. The videos were directed by Ethan Gold himself. For “Alexandria & Me” he used his phone and for “In New York” he used archival footage and photographs from himself and friends aand Douglas Emerson took care of the editing.

Ethan about “Alexandria & Me”: "I might have filmed in the very hallways and rooms which inspired this song — the Alexandria Hotel, with an actress who could be Alexandria and could be living or not, in the thrilling night on the town in this megalopolis, or as a gnostic priest told me after I’d written the song, this reincarnation of the ancient city of Alexandria. Where a luxuriant smell of death commingled with the barely-living, and people used to cross from living to dead or dead to living. But my time machines got downsized by a pandemic so I used no crew but my phone, then I told my editor Douglas Emerson to use a maximalist approach, to evoke the overwhelming psychedelic flavor of the stenchy velvet halls of the corroded, colorful, bleak, exhilarating downtown LA before speculators came in with whitewash.

Ethan about “In New York”: "Layers of history pile on top of each other in any port city. Immigrants come and go. Crime rises and falls. People strive and fail. A few ‘make it’. But everyone is under the spell of the city. New York feels like a being, like no other; hot, cold, and always herself. This video is for the city, and for anyone who’s ever fallen in love there, fallen in love with a person, or with the bridges and buildings and rain on the living grey pavement. In the summer in the parks or out on the street under evening snow."
