Falcon Jane Unveils 'Cross Country Legacy' | A Retro Style Game to Explore Sonic Universe of New LP 'Legacy'
Falcon Jane today shares ‘Cross Country Legacy’ - a web based retro style adventure game that invites players to explore the sonic universe of her new record Legacy. ‘Cross Country Legacy’ was developed by Elaine Fath (the co-designer of Japanese BreakQuest alongside Michelle Zauner) and Misha Velichansky and is available to play free online now.
Play: ‘Cross Country Legacy’
On ‘Cross Country Legacy’ you play the role of an unnamed trucker driving along a moonlit country highway as the lines start to blur. The game was inspired by the 90s kid’s favourite ‘Cross Country Canada’ and Falcon Jane’s new alt country LP album, Legacy, fitting perfectly alongside the album both in tone and spirit.
“My childhood best friend’s dad was a trucker, and as a child, I couldn’t imagine what that life would be like,” says Sara May, the singer and songwriter behind Falcon Jane. “Until I was old enough for my class to use the computer lab at school and play every 90s kid’s favourite computer game: Cross Country Canada! I was obsessed with this game. And now we have Cross Country Legacy! A more spiritual (and spooky!) version of the original game, inspired by songs I wrote that were inspired by my childhood bestie’s dad. Full circle moment.
I’m so excited for people to give life on the road a try with this game. It reminds me of long drives home with the band after a gig; feeling exhausted, delirious, and hyper all at once. Driving down a country highway with moonlight coming through the windows. Having casual conversations that are absurd but somehow deep. It’s a vibe.”
“As soon as I heard Legacy, I knew I wanted to make a game for it.” says developer Elaine Fath. “It's been a long time in the works—I brainstormed the starter concept of a night driving game with Nick about a year ago now—and then I was delighted when one of my favorite engineers, science fiction authors, and all-around pals Misha Velichansky liked the tracks as much as I did. I gave them the songs and in a few days they came back with a brainstorming doc that said right at the top something like "Voice from radio: How do you think it feels to be left alone all the time?" and I was like—yep, that's exactly it.
Across Legacy May explores many of the great characters of country music: the drinker, the vagabond, the neglecting father and the broken hearted. She deftly presents the characters, flaws and all, with a clarity and empathy that feels almost transgressive. But these are May’s stories too: her rural childhood, her move to the big city of Toronto, her current home in a working class small town, and her life on the road as a musician. Produced by José Contreras (By Divine Right), Legacy is available now via Darling Records
