New Music from Angus & Julia Stone

One of Australia’s most acclaimed songwriting duos, Angus & Julia Stone, return with their new single ‘Monroe’, the latest track from their forthcoming seventh studio album Karaoke Bar, set for release on September 4 via Virgin Music.

Arriving in the wake of the album’s title track, ‘Monroe’ continues to expand the sonic and emotional world of Karaoke Bar, offering a deeply atmospheric reflection on love, fragility, and emotional reciprocity. Born at Miraval Studios in the south of France during a rare window between European and US touring commitments, the legendary recording space - originally built in the 1970s and home to recordings by artists including Pink Floyd, The Cure, and AC/DC, and recently restored by Brad Pitt - gave Angus & Julia Stone a single week to immerse themselves in its storied creative atmosphere. “It was so wild,” Angus recalls, “to be in that place, surrounded by so much history.”

Lyrically, ‘Monroe’ leans into imagery of nature and transformation, weaving together references to water, weather, and shifting seasons as metaphors for relational imbalance and emotional dependence. The repeated refrain “a little bit of you goes, then a little bit of me goes” anchors the track in a cyclical push-and-pull, while moments of stillness - “nothing matters when it rains, you always stay the same” - hint at both comfort and inevitability.

Across Karaoke Bar, Angus & Julia Stone continue to refine a body of work shaped by movement, place, and instinct. Written and recorded across Greece, France, and Australia, the album captures a sense of travel not just geographically, but emotionally, tracing the spaces between solitude and shared experience.

Since their breakthrough with A Book Like This in 2007, Angus & Julia Stone have built a globally adored catalogue defined by emotional clarity and cinematic warmth. Their 2010 album Down the Way marked a defining moment, debuting at number one in Australia and producing the enduring hit ‘Big Jet Plane’. Across subsequent releases, including collaborations with Rick Rubin and their ARIA Award-winning soundtrack work on Life Is Strange, the duo have continued to evolve while maintaining a distinct and recognisable creative language.

Their most recent album Cape Forestier (2024) saw a return to their Australian creative base, followed by a sold-out international tour spanning iconic venues including London’s Royal Albert Hall, Paris’ L’Olympia, and New York’s Town Hall.
