'Karaoke Bar' by Angus & Julia Stone

Fresh from announcing their forthcoming seventh studio album Karaoke Bar, set for release on September 4 via Virgin Music, Angus & Julia Stone today share the official music video for the album's title track - a striking visual directed by Julia Stone and starring acclaimed American actor, musician and producer Garrett Hedlund.

Filmed against the rugged landscapes and wild beauty of Tasmania, the video expands on the song’s themes of human connection, vulnerability and shared experience. Through a series of intimate and cinematic moments, Hedlund brings the emotional heart of Karaoke Bar to life, capturing the quiet longing and fleeting connections that exist between strangers.

The collaboration marks another creative meeting between Stone and Hedlund, whose longstanding friendship and mutual artistic admiration shaped the project.

Hedlund says, "I was heading to Australia and Julia asked, ‘Would you wanna fly to Tasmania and shoot this video for Karaoke Bar with me?’ And I said, ‘In a heartbeat,’ because I knew it would not only be an adventure, but it would undoubtedly be poetry. Any time I’ve ever worked with Julia it’s just always been the raw epitome of what one wishes the creative process to be."

He continues, "I admire Julia’s instinct as a director. She has a deep understanding of storytelling, rhythm and emotion, and a rare ability to make the audience truly feel the tenderness in the work."

Speaking about the video, Julia Stone says, "Directing the music video for ‘Karaoke Bar’ was such a special experience. At its heart, the song is about connection and the way music can bring people together. Garrett’s character starts out feeling separate from the world around him, like life is happening for everyone else but not quite for him. Then, through one small decision during the course of an ordinary day, he finds himself connected to a room full of strangers.

Working with Garrett is a dream. He’s thoughtful, generous and brings a real honesty to everything he does. He brought so much depth and humanity to this character, and I couldn’t imagine a better person to have at the centre of this story."

Written while travelling on the Greek island of Hydra and recorded across Greece, France and Australia, the Karaoke Bar album was shaped by the places, people and moments Angus & Julia Stone encountered along the way. Rich with warmth, spontaneity and a renewed sense of creative freedom, the album leans into themes of connection, joy and shared experience, inviting listeners into a world where music becomes a meeting place. Garrett Hedlund is an American actor, musician and producer best known for his roles in Friday Night Lights, Tron: Legacy, Mudbound and Country Strong, whilst currently starring in Tulsa King, and the upcoming Unspeakable: The Murder of Jon Benet Ramsey. Alongside his acclaimed screen career, Hedlund is an accomplished musician whose passion for storytelling and songwriting has become a defining part of his creative work.
