Jazz performer Judith Owen shares new single BLOSSOM'S BLUES, announces new album

Judith Owen — powerhouse British vocalist, pianist and songwriter — is today sharing her new single, ‘Blossom’s Blues’. The single, previewed yesterday on Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show, brings a ‘new sound, new style’ as Owen returns to her childhood love affair with the “unapologetic” ladies of 1940’s/50’s jazz and blues.

Judith Owen has reached her creative happy place. After a celebrated career, which has seen her release numerous critically acclaimed albums, tour the world, from The Royal Albert Hall to Sydney Opera House, and received praise from the likes of Annie Lennox, Burt Bacharach, Cassandra Wilson and Jamie Cullum, the multi-talented musician is ready to embark upon a new era, filled with sparkle and joy.

This next iteration of Owen finds her right back at the beginning of her life as a musician, discovering the rare and obscure jazz records in her parent’s record collection nestled amongst the Rachmaninov and Puccini. Artists like Nellie Lutcher, Julia Lee and Blossom Deariestrong, accomplished and incredibly witty women at the piano.

‘"It’s important that we share our stories and the stories of the woman that have gone before and inspired us. And that's why I wanted to make this record because when I was a kid what I heard was sub- lime confidence. And that's what I wanted, and what I’ve spent my life trying to become unapologetically myself.”

Judith has now shared this first taste of this hotly anticipated upcoming album, the single ‘Blossom’s Blues’, by cult jazz singer and pianist Blossom Dearie.

Representative of the delicious naughtiness with which Owen has approached the entire album, this first single defines all the incredible female artists who were singing about and celebrating sex, at a time when women were “meant” to be singing about romance.

Owen says: “The joy here is that she’s this diminutive little blonde lady at the piano, with the look of a librarian who’s talking about herself like she’s a race horse, a man-eater. There’s a great line that says, ‘Ray Brown (who was Blossom’s bass player) told me I was built for speed’, which basically means she’s really good in the sack. To me, that is one of the most outrageously brilliant, self deprecating lines I’ve ever heard.”
