Kids With Buns dare to take on Guus Meeuwis’ smash hit ‘Het Is Een Nacht’ in Liefde voor Muziek
Tonight airs the sixth episode of Liefde Voor Muziek which centers around dutch artist 'Guus Meeuwis' and his repertoire. Marie and Amber of Kids With Buns had the honor to cover his biggest hit 'Het Is Een Nacht'. They translated the song to English and renamed it 'Is This The Night'.
Thirty years ago, Guus Meeuwis scored his very first smash hit with Het Is Een Nacht. What followed was an impressive career filled with sold-out concert halls, millions of fans, and even a spot in the Guinness Book of Records. "The first solo artist to perform so many concerts in the same venue," Guus says proudly. "It ended up being 72 shows over 19 years in my favorite stadium, the Philips Stadium."
As the youngest duo, Kids With Buns dares to take on Guus’ oldest hit, Het Is Een Nacht. "We wouldn’t be Kids With Buns if we didn’t make it a little sad," the duo says. "For me, this is the most emotional song. Your version is about sleeping with someone for the first time — ours is about the night you decide to break up." Marie adds.
Guus reflects on the origin of his most famous song. "Actually, it was my brother who inspired us to do this. I had been studying in Leuven for a year and a half and ended up living above a café with a piano and a guitar. That’s where I wrote the song," Guus shares. "We got an invitation to a student song festival, and my brother knew I had written that song. He said: ‘We’re going to join.’ I had never sung it in public before, but he convinced me — in a very liquid way."
The full performance will be broadcasted tonight on VTM and - spoiler alert - Guus is very fond of the adaptation. "I’m truly honored and deeply surprised by this quirky interpretation of Het Is Een Nacht by Kids With Buns. Two worlds that seem miles apart come together in a single song. Same movie, different ending! Love it!"
