Konyikeh releases Third EP Cinere out now via Famm

British musician Konyikeh has released her new EP ‘Cinere’, a captivating seven-track project out now via FAMM. Accompanying the release is the video for ‘Jealous’, an expansive and soulful offering, exploring the kind of love Konyikeh has yet to experience. Watch the video HERE.

‘Cinere’, taken from the latin term ‘Ex cinere’ meaning “to rise from the ashes”, captures the very moments Konyikeh is living through now - an artist doing things on her own terms, confronting the deepest parts of herself and holding them up to the light for all to see.

Working with long-time collaborators production duo DUKE. and Charlie Perry, ‘Cinere’ is a rich and layered collection that challenges categorisation, and is a true masterclass in sound. Driven by her love for live music and instrumentation, Konyikeh played and arranged all of the strings across the project and earned producer credits throughout, explaining: “I just went back to basics in a way..I just wanted to go back to what I know and love.” The result is expert songwriting and an achingly formidable voice set against spectacular instrumentation across an array of genres, with nods to Konyikeh’s love of amapiano, gqom, rap and even just straight-up classical. Whatever the case, these are gorgeous songs that make you sway, dance, weep, smile and dream. There’s no way you won’t be moved.

Using her decade-long musical education and training, Konyikeh brings classical instrumentation into a contemporary space that feels completely instinctive - rooted in process, yet deeply relatable. The project’s haunting opener ‘Buyer’s Remorse’ is a stunning meditation on the fear of someone investing time in you without knowing your full story; ‘Vulnerability’ finds her pushing past the worry of being perceived as the an “angry Black woman” and recognising that her feelings are valid, while ‘Mercenary’, heavily inspired by Arabic scales, explores power dynamics and performative men. The cinematic interlude ‘Miserere’ sets the stage for the gentle beauty of ‘Blackthorne’, before EP closer ‘There For Me’ - a freestyle Konyikeh wrote in 2021, at a time when she didn’t fully understand her dreams yet.
