Mountain Tamer unveil new single for SXSW tour
Hailing from golden Los Angeles, heavy psych trio Mountain Tamer dish out a lysergic blend of stoner riffs and psychedelic freakouts with a distinctly dark undercurrent.
The band will hit the road in March for an 11-date tour of the southwestern USA with a key stop at the face-melting South by Southwest Stoner Jam in Austin, where both they and tourmatesSalem's Bend will perform (alongside Howling Giant, High Priestess, The Hazytones, etc.).
In support of the tour and laying the groundwork for their upcoming album, Mountain Tamer are releasing sinister new single Death in the Woods, which premieres today via The Obelisk, who state, "Its low end is grim, its vocals just a bit throatier, so that as the song moves further into its crash-laden freakout, the screams that come aren’t entirely unexpected."

Formed in 2011 outside San Francisco, Mountain Tamer found early support while touring with acts like Dead Meadow and Weedeater. They self-released their demo, MTNTMR, to the masses, which landed them a deal with Argonauta Records for their self-titled debut album. Their growing notoriety found the trio relocating to LA and opening for the likes of Nick Oliveri’sMondo Generator and other Cali-based scene stalwarts.
The lucid jams, swinging drums and angular riffs of 2018 full-length Godfortune Darkmattersfurther pushed their musical horizons as the band blazed ahead, always with their sights on more touring and delving further into their own unique perspective on dark, psychedelic fuzz.
- “Soaring through the dunes one moment then imploding the psyche the next before crawling along the sunburnt ground of Death Valley – it is that intense.” – Metal Observer
- “The three-piece carve out their niche somewhere between lurching grunge and heavy psych freakouts... their style is more intense overall than a lot of the chilled-to-the-max guitar-heroics of the post-Earthless set, but not necessarily born of wildly different influences in classic heavy rock, punk and desert jams.” – The Obelisk
- “A palpable journey through groovy, low-key sludge... taking a page from the earlier books of bands like the Melvins and creating a strong groove to drive the sludge.” – Metal Assault
Death in the Woods releases digitally on Magnetic Eye Records on February 27th.
