Multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter Bird is releasing her evocative new single 'What The Night Knows’
Multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter, Bird, is proud to announce the release of her evocative new single, "What The Night Knows", from her critically acclaimed soundtrack album for the award-winning short film "Wider Than The Sky." The single, produced by legendary producer Mike Hedges (U2, Travis, The Cure), and co-written with renowned Belgian composer Jeroen Swinnen, is a haunting, dream-like folk/electronica song with hypnotic melodies, accented with subtle hints of Americana. The song is an exquisite example of Bird’s ability to blend folk roots with subtle electronic elements, creating a unique and unforgettable soundscape.
Speaking on “What The Night Knows” Bird shares: “I wrote this song in Tuscany in an old house that gave me strange vivid dreams...I've always had a curious relationship with night time and sleep - as a child I was very fearful of the dark, especially during a period when my father and mother were both very sick and I had to stay with friends of the family in unfamiliar rooms. As an adult and as a musician the night turned into a time of great intense creativity for me where I would hide in small studios and hone my craft. (Studio time was a lot cheaper - often even free - at night too)! On the original version of the song there is a tea cup stirring sound and counting at the start which pays homage to the film Get Out by director Jordan Peele. Mike Hedges (producer) and I watched it together at my place...we'd actually already recorded the song but I felt the song really connected with the film – hypnotism, the place between wake and sleep...so we put those new elements in at the start..for the radio edit this had to be cut but it’s there on the album.”
“What The Night Knows” is the 4th single taken from "Wider Than The Sky," a semi-autobiographical short film, that delves into the profound impact of childhood parental illness and showcases the extraordinary power of imagination in helping children cope with traumatic events. Bird's compositions provide a hauntingly beautiful backdrop to the film’s poignant visual storytelling, creating a seamless synergy between music and cinema. The soundtrack features a mix of instrumental themes and four full-length songs, intricately woven to enhance the narrative depth of the film.
Bird’s previous releases from "Wider Than The Sky" have garnered rave reviews from the press. The first single, "The Tides," was described by Record Of The Day as, "Simply beautiful. Think Groove Armada's 'At The River' meets Röyksopp tinged with James Bond orchestration." Wonderland Magazine praised it for its unique blend of electronic and folk elements, stating, "Blending electronic notes into a folk instrumental base, she creates awe-inspiring and expansive soundscapes that are truly one-of-a-kind."
The second single, "She’s Like A Rainbow," received high praise from Adam Walton of BBC Wales, who called it "jaw droppingly beautiful."
"Wider Than The Sky" has been celebrated at numerous prestigious film festivals around the world, winning several awards including:
- "Best Composer/Soundtrack" at the Global Music Awards
- "Best Cinematography" at the Bay Festival, UK
- "Best Short Drama" at the Aviva/Performance Film & Media Insurance Awards
- "Best Outstanding Drama" at the Short Sweet Film Festival, USA
- "Best Short" at the Maryland International Film Festival
- "Best Family Friendly Short" at The Oxford Film Festival
Bird's music, with its ethereal melodies and emotional depth, has become the perfect companion to the film’s exploration of imagination and resilience. "What The Night Knows" continues this tradition, offering listeners a mesmerising experience that lingers long after the final note.
This summer Bird is supporting the release of “Wider Than The Sky” and its singles with various festival appearances including The Great Escape and Black Deer. She also performed live at an album launch event and film screening at London’s Everyman Cinema earlier this month - which Good Star Vibes called “nothing short of captivating”.
