Warhaus returns with 'The Baby'

Almost two years after the release of his critically acclaimed album Karaoke Moon, Warhaus returns with new song The Baby, out today via Play It Again Sam.

Produced by longtime collaborator Jasper Maekelberg, The Baby sees Warhaus stepping into new territory. The track opens the door to a more electronic sonic palette, marking a shift from the sound of his previous work. In Warhaus’ own words, The Baby is his first attempt at writing a lullaby, yet the track carries an energy and intensity far from a traditional lullaby. It begins with an alienating synth riff, beneath which a restrained, angular rhythm lies in wait, ready to launch a surprise attack. An ominous bass follows, and then there’s that raw voice, snarling in our faces: “man where are you, are you under water? what are you? you do what you can?”. Who is this man? What on earth are we listening to?

These are questions many listeners will ask themselves upon hearing The Baby. Even Maarten Devoldere himself seems somewhat overwhelmed by what he’s become — as a musician, yes, but also as a person. Then the beat bursts forth, hurling itself headlong onto the dancefloor of a dark club, where it bounces around nervously, sending many a hip into a bewildering state of excitement.

Though he hasn’t released new music in almost two years, Warhaus has remained very active. Following the release of Karaoke Moon, he spent much of 2025 on the road, playing more than 50 shows across Europe and the UK, including performances at some of the continent’s most renowned venues and festivals.

Earlier this year, he took a different approach, touring a series of intimate shows alongside acclaimed classical pianist Julien Libeer. The performances saw the pair reimagining Warhaus’ best-known songs in stripped-back arrangements, alongside previously unreleased material.

With The Baby, Warhaus now begins the next phase of his musical journey, one that promises to explore new territory while retaining the singular songwriting and atmosphere that have defined his work to date.
