Tornado Lobster Killer release new single “Pay To Play”: when playing music becomes a luxury and resisting becomes a choice

There comes a point when urgency stops being an idea and becomes a necessity. Pay To Play, the new single from Tornado Lobster Killer, was born exactly there: where passion collides with reality and still refuses to back down.

The first single taken from Lobsteria, the track is far more than an introduction — it’s a statement of intent. The title came out of a conversation between Croma and the late Marco Garripoli, a long-time outspoken critic of the toxic dynamics surrounding the underground live music scene. Those same dynamics are exposed, twisted and spat back out here through razor-sharp sarcasm.

Written by Croma and Matteo, Pay To Play is a lucid and disillusioned outburst about survival both inside and outside the punk/hardcore scene. It’s all in there: financial instability, the feeling of failure, the weight of expectations, and the sense of moving through an increasingly closed system where playing live becomes a privilege you have to pay for rather than a space you earn. But above all, the song captures the band’s response: a stubborn kind of resistance that still finds a reason to keep going through music.

The metaphor is clear and intentionally exaggerated: the jungle of self-promotion, compromises, and small humiliations every emerging band knows all too well. All of it set against a backdrop where venues disappear, guarantees vanish, and only those willing to grit their teeth and push forward remain.

In line with this vision, the single is entirely self-produced. Recording sessions were handled by Cristian Masiero — with bass tracks recorded at HP Music Studio in Ringwood, UK — while mixing and mastering were completed at Cristian Masiero Music Studio. The visual identity also remains fully within the TLK universe: the cover photo was shot by their friend Nora, while all graphics were created by Croma.

Active since 2018, Tornado Lobster Killer have always chosen the longest and least comfortable road: radical DIY. Formed in Milan by Marco “Croma” Cordopatre, Matteo Salaroli and Nanà “Octopus” Dalla Porta, the band gradually built an autonomous and coherent identity far removed from easy compromises. After releasing their self-titled debut independently, they began gaining attention through intense live activity, sharing the stage with historic names in the Italian punk scene and opening, among others, for Punkreas.

Now, with a solidified line-up featuring Cristian Masiero on drums and Roberto Moro on lead guitar, TLK enter the most self-aware phase of their journey so far. Lobsteria, the album featuring Pay To Play, marks a shift toward melodic hardcore territory while still preserving the band's original punk rock attitude. It’s a circular, almost meta-narrative work reflecting the very period in which it was created: alienation, instability, identity and resistance intertwine in a continuous flow.
