Romyo releases new single ’Velvet’
Meeting an ex can often stir up mixed emotions. Especially when it brings back memories of something you can neither live without nor escape, even though you know it’s not good for you.
“’Velvet’ is about meeting an old flame - about a great and powerful love that was also toxic and marked by suffering,” Romyo begins. “Even though you are close to healing from the trauma they left behind, you still find yourself surrendering to it. You are reborn in the chaos and a symbiosis of sex, sweat and tears. But only in a dream, where what once hurt can be allowed to live on without causing any harm.”
The song’s exploration of sleep paralysis is reflected in its simple, transcendent chords, while the dreamy soundscape is both grand and intimate. At the same time, there is something cathartic about the mid-8, where Romyo lets the guitar run free, inspired by his childhood hero. He explains:
“My all-time teen hero is John Mayer. He opened my world to the infinite possibilities contained within the six strings. To the beauty of sound and to letting go. This is where I feel at home. And I think it’s time we bring the guitar back into pop music.”
Behind Romyo is Copenhagen-based musician Emil Wiendel. He has previously released music as Wili Solo and has, among others, been highlighted by influential media outlets such as Soundvenue (DK), COLORS (DE), Ones To Watch (US) and CRACK Magazine (UK).
’Velvet’ is being released independently via Universal Music.
