SamWoy (Patrick Watson, FHANG) Reveals "White Dog" | An Ode to Classic 80s Sci-Fi

SamWoy is the moniker of Montreal-based songwriter and JUNO award winning producer Sam Woywitka who is also half of the genre-busting electronic duo FHANG with bass legend Mishka Stein.

The video for “White Dog '' was shot on location in Montreal in just one day. Produced and directed by Sam and featuring the work of cinematographer Evangelos Desborough and dancer Britt Canda, the video was inspired by 80’s sci-fi and horror movies and is an ode to Beyond the Black Rainbow by Panos Cosmatos.

The video portrays a desolate loneliness. Speaking on the video Sam says, “its not that we are unhappy from the start but maybe it has something to do with living in a time when we are bombarded by false happiness and hope It is a throwback therapy session as we tap into dark psychedelia while paying homage to past 80’s sci fi and horror classics.”

The main throughline throughout Woywitka’s music is a restless commitment to sonic experimentation. White Dog” reveals lush synth string arrangements that are bisected by gnarled synth Arpeggios, accompanied by drums that sound as though they are created by a galactic war machine. Sam is accompanied by some of Canada's greatest players on the track- Mishka Stein (Patrick Watson), Robbie Kuster, and Erika Angell (Thus Owls).

Through his debut solo project, Sam unveils soundscapes that cross a dizzyingly vast terrain: from warm downtempo electronica to full-throated garage punk, from dancefloor-ready grooves to warped and nostalgic ambient pieces. No genre distinctions are sacred here, and no sounds are too discordant to be amalgamated. Repurposed and reimagined sounds, often sampled, scrambled, and processed beyond recognition, create an immersive and mind-bending listening experience.
