Wintershome about debutalbum with Matterhorn’s soul & strength

For more than six years, the Zermatt folk-pop formation Wintershome has been enchanting with its lightness and lively musicality. It feeds on a friendly-family cohesion, let’s say The Corrs of Suisse, a deep attachment to nature, and the great naturalness with which they are together and make music. The band has long since crossed Zermatt’s borders. They have delighted as support for Texas or at Zermatt Unplugged Kaufleuten. Wintershome’s debut album 'Around you I found you ' was released in April 2018. American producer Ryan Hadlock took a liking to their demo recordings and made it possible for Wintershome to record the album in Seattle at Bear Creek Studio where musicians like The Lumineers and Joe Cocker were already working on their recordings.

On the 11 th of April, Wintershome played in the Vernissage on that magical Zermatt Unplugged Festival. The Zermatunplugged Instagram @ Wintershomemusic mentions: “This was so much fun!”.

Frontview Magazine talked with Romaine (vocals, guitar) about their gig and new debut album. First time we met Romaine (October 29th 2016), she was accompanying artists of Zermatt Unplugged Kaufleuten in Zürich for Gecko Communications. On these days, Romaine is an artist herself and the success of Wintershome is increasing quickly.

Wintershome has started from now on to conquer Europe with the release of “Around You I Found You“ in Germany, Austria, Benelux and whole Scandinavia today.

Once you’re listening to the album, you get a feel-good sensation. When they are playing, they are feeling home, their journey ends and begins in Zermatt. Listen to the touchingly match of the voices in ‘Cause I care’, a marching peloton of soldiers in ‘Scars and War’. So all-round and surprisingly.

First to get to know Wintershome, propose us the members with their funny behaviors.

Mary started to sing before she was born. She often forgets things, but in the same time cares for everybody... a good soul.

Rebecca dreams of a nightliner and sometimes throws around her drumsticks.

Pirmin always wears a hat and loves watching funny animal videos and laughs over it for hours.

Joel tells jokes (twohundred a day)when he gets excited, he behaves himself as a little boy that’s looking forward to something . He jumps and runs to let some energy coming out.

Romaine loves being on stage that much, that she would even camp on it if she could.

Elia is our one and only allrounder. He somehow knows all about the soundengineering and fixes almost everything that is broken.

Wintershome went to Seattle, just to record the album or also to write (new) songs?

We were always in a kind of composing and came back with a lot of new ideas .. but we didn’t concretely write a whole new song. We spent most of the time in recording the album and went travelling on the weekends.

How did the environment influenced the sound of the album?

We felt home at the Bear Creek studio. This feeling has always inspired us and is our main inspiration for our debutalbum. We were close to nature in a very old farm recording the album,very authentic. The sound of the album is honest and authentic, such as this place.

What kind of person is producer Ryan Hadlock ?

Ryan is a very patient and creative person. He became not only a person to work with, but also a close friend. He was open for all our ideas and wanted to express our spirit on the album. We recorded everything we wanted and Ryan had beautiful ideas that made our songs sound bigger.

How did you choose the album title, was there first a ‘working title’?

When we were looking for a title, we took all the lyrics of our songs again and started talking about this sentence “Around You I Found You”. We couldnt stop talking about our inspirations and suddenly the sentence made perfect sense with everything. In everything that was around us, mainly the nature, we found the inspiration for our music.

Which glacier do we see on the front cover and what is your personal favourite place in Zermatt?

We see the Gornergletscher above Zermatt, which is a beautiful spot. But our very favourite place is the lost valley.. but we don’t want to talk about, it has to stay a secret spot for the local people.

What’s the main message behind the album ?

Rebecca used to say, that a song has to come out of your heart, and so will directly come into the heart of someone else. We talk about different topics, which have all something to do with the human being and his emotions. We want to awaken these emotions.

Songs as “Wine to Water”, “Vision To Grow”, “Scar and War” seek the attention.

We often discuss about life. Sometimes we go very deep into a topic and then songs like ‘Wine to Water’, ‘Vision to Grow’ and ‘Scars and War’ are created.

Wintershome has come down from the mountains to speak to us about Nature, is it the soul of the mountains that speaks in the music?

Yes. But we think we could also have written something about the sea... It’s nature in general that inspires us.

There’s also a vinyl version of the album, do you possess also a collection vinyls of other artists?

Not everyone of the band. But there are two hipsters in the band who do have.

Which new songs were the public’s favourite on Zermatt Unplugged 2018?

It was the really first time that we experienced people showing their emotions. They were crying in the Song “Cause I Care” and were singing along the lyrics of “Up to You”.

Can you describe the feeling on stage, playing with your friends in your hometown?

No words for that.

Is their a ritual for the Wintershome clan, before going on stage?

We sing the chorus of Mumford and Sons “Hopeless Wanderer”.

First live dates are in Switzerland, also dreaming of a tour in the neighbouring countries?

As Rebecca dreams of a nightliner, yes we dream about going international.

How does it feel to be in the Suisse charts at n 7, just three places behind Kylie Minoque?

Very unexpected... but nothing beats the feeling of being on stage!

Last question , can we still found the Leontopodium Alpinum in the mountains?

Wow we had to google what it is, but yes, Joel spotted an EDELWEISS in lost valley ;)
