Yee Loi announce debut album with exclusive party at Yungblud's Denmark Street store

Liverpool punk trio Yee Loi announced their forthcoming debut album, Flicks, licks, party tricks, with a breathless, high-octane set down in the basement at Yungblud’s Denmark Street store.

Packed to the rafters, the Soho venue in London’s historic musical centre saw Yee Loi - teenage siblings Rose (guitar, backing vocals), Matilda (drums, vocals), Don Don (bass) - deliver a masterclass in raw, unfiltered UK punk.

The performance was an eye-catching showcase of the band’s signature sound, moving between the full-throttle melody of their recent single ‘Social Suicide’ and the morbid storytelling of ‘Down In The Bunker’, tracks which made songs of the week lists in the likes of Kerrang!, MTV UK and Northern Exposure.

Journalists were treated to some of the band’s breakout tracks like ‘Why Ask Why’ and ‘Mystery Train’, as well as some unheard songs from the new album ‘Miraclist’ and ‘Picture Perfect’. The night proved that although their spirit and inspiration lies with classic punk history, Yee Loi and their energy belong to the present.

In October, fans will be able to see Yee Loi live, supporting legendary ‘80s pop-punk icons Transvision Vamp on their first full UK tour since 1991. Handpicked by frontwoman Wendy James, the band will bring their fast-paced melodies to major venues nationwide.

Yee Loi do things their own way and Rose said: “We don’t really care what people think. It’s the way that we were raised.”

Such an ethos is evidenced in their most recent single ‘Social Suicide’, in which they address the band’s growing frustration with a music industry that pushes artists to trade their creativity for views, likes and digital clout.

Rose said: “The more we get involved in music the more we realise that for many people, musical ability just isn't enough. A good song now needs every type of social media exposure possible to be able to achieve any success. It just seems that people are prepared to sell their souls for views, likes and follows. We just want to make great punk rock and roll songs that move people”.

Flicks, licks, party tricks is the band’s debut album, fusing their classic punk inspirations like The Ramones with their own DIY, melodic identity. Their relentless energy and charisma plays an integral role in the album.

Matilda said: “The album title is about the joy that comes from playing this high energy type of music. It makes you wanna go crazy on stage and try to make everyone join in the fun. It was important for me to finally put out my own lyrics and melodies and not have to rely on covers. I have quite a lot to say and maybe somebody will be interested!”

Rose said: “My guitar playing on this album is all me and it’s high energy but you can definitely hear my influences. I’m quite proud of that! The songs on this album show that young girls can play high intensity guitar rock as good as anybody if not better!”

Adding a rare quote, bassist Don Don - usually the quietest member of the group - spoke out about what sets this album apart.

Don said: “I love this album and I’m fed up of listening to the lightweight, backing-tracked songs that pass for so-called punk rock today.”
