A rock opera for the 21st century. ‘Gutterdämmerung ’ is a silent movie presented as a rock show, with an awesome live band and firework explosions. It’s a unique combination. Up until now only classical music has been the accompaniment to silent movies. The project is the brainchild of Bjorn Tagemose, a Belgian Swede (or Swedish Belgian), who has a long track record in the music industry as a photographer and film maker. A show concept for The Hives with film and pyrotechnics convinced him that the idea would work. One of his customers, Grace Jones, was the lynchpin who set everything in motion. Tagemose’s entire dream team signed up to play in the film: Iggy Pop, the late Lemmy, Slash, Joshua Homme, Henry Rollins… ‘Gutterdämmerung’ is a rock show presentation, for a standing audience. At Rock Werchter on Thursday 30 June. The film’s accompanying music is played by a band led by guitarist Kevin Armstrong (David Bowie, Morrissey, Iggy Pop). The set includes rock anthems (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Stooges…) sung by Jesse Smith, a young Brit with a voice like Robert Plant’s. Henry Rollins will also be present at Werchter, as the narrator. Gutterdämmerung comes straight from the Gutter and is fabulously grotesque. “The loudest silent movie on earth”.
