Don Kapot Ft. Renette Désir lanceren 'Nou Pran Bal'
In the contemporary Haitian music scene, singer Renette Désir stands out as one of the most captivating and authentic voices. In November 2024, as she was returning to Port-au-Prince from New York, her life was turned upside down when her plane was targeted by gang gunfire upon approach. Forced into an emergency landing in Santo Domingo and navigating a rapidly expiring US visa, she eventually arrived in Brussels in March 2025. With escalating violence in Haiti making a return home impossible, she filed for international protection in Belgium.
It was in Brussels that her path crossed with the acclaimed Belgian free-jazz, afrobeat, and krautpunk trio Don Kapot (fresh off the critical success of their album I Love Tempo). What began as an artistic collaboration evolved into a powerful story of exile, survival, and reinvention: the joint album Nou Pran Bal (We Took Fire).
Built around Désir’s personal accounts—poetized by Haitian writer Inema Jeudi and set to Don Kapot’s explosive, risk-taking grooves—the music fuses traditional Voodoo roots, radical jazz, and raw storytelling.
With one month to go before the release of their album Nou pran bal, Don Kapot and Renette are releasing the album’s title track—which is, in fact, what sets the whole story in motion. Imagine this: Renette is comfortably seated on a Spirit Airlines flight taking her home from the United States. Suddenly, there are loud bangs, and the flight attendant shouts, "Nou pran bal!" — "They’re shooting at us!"
