Le Guess Who? deelt liveopname van The Microphones op festivaleditie 2021

Le Guess Who? is een internationaal festival voor grensverleggende muziek en cultuur. De 14e editie van het festival vond plaats van 11-14 november in Utrecht. Een van de vijf gastcuratoren van Le Guess Who? 2021 was Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie/The Microphones).

Naast het samenstellen van een persoonlijk programma met inspiraties en gelijkgestemde artiesten, trad Phil Elverum zelf ook live op tijdens Le Guess Who? 2021, waar hij samen met gitarist Jay Blackinton zijn laatste album ‘The Microphones In 2020’ presenteerde.

Le Guess Who? is verheugd om nu de volledige liveopname van dit optreden, opgenomen en gemixt door Marc Broer en Philip ten Brink, te publiceren. Het is de tweede liveopname van Phil Elverum op Le Guess Who? die het daglicht ziet: in 2018 bracht Elverum '(after)' uit, de opnames van Mount Eerie’s aangrijpende optreden op Le Guess Who? 2017 (gecureerd door Perfume Genius).

Voorafgaand aan Le Guess Who? 2021 schreef Phil Elverum over het optreden:

"We, the band called “the Microphones,” are planning to play a few shows in Europe in November 2021. This will be the first tour by “the Microphones” in 18 years, but as listeners to our last record (Microphones In 2020) will have hopefully heard, that distinction doesn’t mean much. This has always been a project steering toward present-moment raw wound engagement, disappointing the nostalgics, splashing into the unfamiliar. It’s not a reunion (nothing to reunite) and it’s not commemorative. It’s a living thing. We’re playing our one long song, F#m and D for a super long time, and inviting everyone to come get thumped by it. Who knows what else will happen?"

De publicatie van deze opname is onderdeel van Le Guess Who?’s doorlopende uitbreiding van het online archief van het festival. Op de site van Le Guess Who? zijn inmiddels meer dan 50 audio- en/of video-opnames te vinden, waaronder van Mary Margaret O’Hara, Aldous Harding, Deerhunter, Makaya McCraven, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Neneh Cherry, Mount Eerie, Selda Bağcan en vele anderen.
