Savina Yannàtou: CD-voorstelling Songs of Thessaloniki in de Handelsbeurs

In de loop van maart wordt in Europa het nieuwe album van de Griekse muzikante Savina Yannàtou en haar band Primavera en Salonico uitgebracht: "Songs of Thessaloniki" (ECM-label). Dit vierde album werd geproducet door Manfred Eicher en opgenomen in de Sierra Studios, Athene (februari 2014). In België wordt het nieuwe album voorgesteld op 24 maart in de Handelsbeurs (Gent) en op 25 maart in De Roma (Antwerpen).

Savina Yannatou

Savina Yannatou is een onverwoestbare stem. Samen met haar band Primavera en Salonico brengt ze muziek gebaseerd op traditionele genres, vooral uit het Middellandse Zeegebied.

De groep heeft net in Athene zijn vierde album uitgebracht bij het ECM-label. Met haar vierde plaat keert ze nu terug naar de bron: Thessaloniki. In de vroege 20ste eeuw was deze hoofdstad van Macedonië nog een smeltkroes van Joden, Grieken, Turken, Bulgaren, Armeniërs en Albanezen. Met haar uitgebreide ervaring voorzag ze liederen van al die etnische groepen van nieuwe arrangementen, bijgestaan door haar trouwe Primavera en Salonico.

Een boeiende reis naar een maatschappij die wist wat harmonieus samenleven inhoudt. Van al die etnische groepen brengt ze liederen die ze in een nieuw jasje heeft gestoken.

Savina Yannatou: “Old songs, as if with the label Souvenir de salonique, were our original materials. They became canvases for our imagination to create contemporary narratives on old myths. Sometimes the original ‘pictures’ are merely coated with colour, sometimes only the outlines are saved, and sometimes the addition of the new material transforms them completely. There is however an element which remains – by choice – almost unaltered throughout this process: the timbre of the instruments. This is what mostly forms the ‘texture’ of the material and conveys the final sense of the whole endeavor.”
