“Bijzonder” – an intimate concert that resonated on so many levels. Gers Pardoel bared his heart and soul to the audience at the Stadsschouwburg Antwerp yesterday evening. It was the “afsluiter”, the last concert of his current tour and he did not disappoint.

The stage was simple, a glimpse of his studio, the heart of his creative genius. Young and old waited patiently with anticipation until Gers Pardoel appeared. The alternation of the story, the narrative, the echt “verhaal” that fed his drive and determination to succeed and his music was well received.

Gers Pardoel does not like to be described as special, as “bijzonder”. For him, the term is linked to conations of his special education as a child. He asked that he not be described as special, but rather as normal. It is his desire for “echtheid” or authenticity and truth that is key in his work, and was tactile in his performance. The song “Zo Bijzonder” was perfectly timed at this point and was well received by all.

Singing “Zijn” one is made aware of his honesty and desire for others to be themselves. This approach was refreshing in this time of narcissism and the need to portray and image of oneself that meets or surpasses the expectations of peers. Gers Pardoel emphasized that one should remain true to oneself – always be yourself.

Many great things are created from what seems like nothing. Diamonds are formed from coal. From difficult times, a determination is born. Emotion is a catalyst for many to create a different life. For Gers, his music was his sanctuary. Music was always there, even when others weren’t.

The audience was led through the various pinnacle moments in Gers Pardoel’s life, including meeting Louise, having fame, finding himself alone and rediscovering his path. The evening ended with a fantastic rendition of “Ik neem je mee”. He took the audience by the hand, and by the heart, and explained that his public are his motivation. Life is short. If you want to achieve something, do it. Stop talking and start doing.

The concert was uplifting and touching. Gers Pardoel certainly has won the heart of many in Belgium. Language should not be a defining factor – the message in Gers Pardoel’s songs ascends the boundaries of language. Many English speaking people listen to French music, comprehending little, but feeling a great deal. With Gers Pardoel, his music is accessible to all – it is not defined purely by language, but more by the soul within. “Bijzonder” it was – remarkable and memorable perhaps even more so.
