The Beast is the new single from Tom McRae. It is the first single from his new 45 RPM project. “People used to ask: what was the first single you bought? It was important. What did you like enough to spend your pocket money on? Not which streaming service did you first subscribe to, or which TikTok were you addicted to?
As a very young kid I used to buy cheap secondhand singles at yard sales, take them home and pretend I was a radio DJ, playing a crazy selection of songs and chatting about the weather in between. The only one listening was my cat. Some songs were from albums, but many were standalone releases, at a time when singles were eagerly anticipated, the charts mattered, and there was a romance to each release.
The world moves fast these days, politics, culture, and especially music. Songs become just another track on another playlist, albums come and go. It feels like there are a thousand revolutions per minute. I preferred it when there were just 45.
So I want to release a group of singles over the coming months that aren’t part of an album, but are songs that enable me to try a different perspective, stretch my wings a bit as a songwriter and producer. Not songs that are just used to promote an album, but songs that are happy to stand by themselves. Alone. Single.”
