Distorta Unleash Powerful New Music Video, “Beneath the Surface”, featuring John Jarratt (Wolf Creek) & Nicole Sharrock (Housos)

Australian heavy act Distorta have officially released their powerful new music video, “Beneath the Surface,” featuring acclaimed actors John Jarratt and Nicole Sharrock.

Filmed in Sydney in a single afternoon in November 2025, the video was produced by Chris Konesky of Black Bulb Music Video Productions. Blending emotionally driven storytelling with Distorta’s signature high-intensity performance, the clip stands as one of the band’s most confronting and authentic releases to date.

At its core, “Beneath the Surface” explores the long-term emotional consequences of trauma, fractured families, and suppressed anger. Jarratt delivers a gripping performance as an absent father consumed by unresolved rage, while Sharrock portrays his estranged daughter, shaped by years of abandonment. Their scenes were entirely improvised on set, an approach that brought a striking level of realism to the final product.

As Jarratt explains, the experience allowed for both intensity and dark humour: he describes “playing an absent Dad with anger issues” and “getting pissed off with everybody, beating the crap out of everyone and destroying the hall,” before adding that the tongue-in-cheek finale, where he turns his aggression toward the band was “fantastic” and a highlight of the shoot. Reflecting on the collaboration, he also praised Sharrock as “really wonderful” and commended Konesky’s professionalism behind the camera.

Thematically, the track and its visual counterpart dive deep into the psychological toll of bullying, abuse, and internalised anger, particularly in individuals who may appear outwardly composed. The narrative builds toward a symbolic breaking point, mirroring the song’s exploration of emotional suppression and violent impulse.

For Distorta, authenticity was central to the project. The band emphasise that “Beneath the Surface” is intended to confront uncomfortable realities, noting that themes such as trauma and fractured families are often carried silently for years. By allowing Jarratt and Sharrock to fully inhabit their roles through ad-libbed performances, the band achieved what they describe as a level of honesty that “could never have been scripted.” While unflinching in tone, the video also incorporates moments of dark humour, including the climactic on-stage attack, to balance its intensity.

Intercut throughout the narrative are explosive live performance sequences that capture Distorta in their natural element. These scenes showcase the band’s aggressive sonic identity, commanding stage presence, and powerful connection with audiences, grounding the video firmly in their reputation as a formidable live act.

Producer Chris Konesky echoed the collaborative spirit of the project, noting that the chemistry between Jarratt and Sharrock “set the tone straight away,” delivering the raw emotional energy the team set out to achieve. He adds that successfully capturing the vision in such a tight timeframe was a testament to the collective effort behind the production, expressing hope that audiences connect with the story on a deeper level.
