Extrema Outdoor Belgium announces festival theme.

Extrema Outdoor Belgium has just announced the theme of their 2017 festival that takes place on 2,3 and 4 June at De Plas in Houthalen-Helchteren. The whole festival, decoration, stage-designs and production will be submerged in 3 transitional stages of global warming: a garden of Eden, a contemporary industrialized and overpopulated city with slums, and a post apocalyptic desert.

“As a sounding board to 40.000 visitors between 20 and 40, we realise the impact we can have with communicating a message of sustainability and environmental consciousness.

Most of our colleagues at Extrema are already green-minded and actively contributing to a better environment, so we think it is time to carry forward this idea and message to our fans and visitors”, says Ugur Akkus, organiser of Extrema Outdoor Belgium. “We are working together with the city council to achieve a totally new approach of producing and managing a festival.”

“As mayor I am very proud that Extrema Outdoor Belgium decided to go for this direction of sustainability. Together with our city partners of Greenville and the local government, this festival will become a true ambassador for an ecological approach when it comes to organising an event like this”, says the mayor of Houthalen - Helchteren, Alain Yzermans.

The whole festival ground will be divided into 3 different areas. First there is a garden of Eden, with lots of nature and green, a carefree existence and very healthy food, fresh air and wide green spaces. In the middle you find yourself in an overpopulated city with lots of pollution, industry and overconsumption. The last area is a futuristic image of a world we are facing if we are not changing our way of life: an apocalyptic desert with almost no natural resources left and camps made out of scraps and waste.

The visitor sees, feels and tastes the evolution and consequences of global warming while walking from one side to another over the festival grounds.

“We are going to measure our ecological footprint as a benchmark. In the next 5 years we will constructively and gradually work up to decrease that footprint to a minimum in 2021.”

Over 120 artists will play on 7 stages during 3 days at the 7th edition of Extrema Outdoor Belgium ! Mark 2, 3 and 4 june 2017 in your agenda!
