The Grammy Museum Hosts 'The Latino Legacy in Southern California Rave Culture' Panel w/ Richard Vission, Bolo, DJ Irene, & Doc Martin on Nov 18

The Grammy Museum is thrilled to celebrate and explore how Latino DJs, dancers, and communities have helped shape Southern California’s rave and electronic dance music culture by bringing together Bolo, DJ Irene, and Doc Martin for a discussion moderated by Richard Vission. Through firsthand stories and selected music, the panel will explore the dance floor as a place of belonging, creative expression and cultural exchange. From party crews and club residencies to radio mix shows and contemporary Latin house, the evening will share how this legacy has been passed down, whose contributions deserve greater recognition, and what the next generation is building, connecting the region’s club and underground histories with a new generation bringing Latino identity to today’s festival stages.

Latinos have long been the dominant force on rave dancefloors across Southern California and beyond. At recent large scale raves such as EDC, HARD, Sky Line or CRSSD, they make up the majority of attendees, but remain vastly underrepresented on-stage.

A new generation is changing that, the Latino Rave Movement is putting Latino and Mexican-American culture on the main stage both visually and sonically, and fans are responding.

In the last 2 years, Mexican-American producer and DJ, Bolo has emerged as the leading figure head of this rave culture revolution. The CA resident’s rise has been meteoric, he drew a crowd of over 30,000 attendees during his main stage set at HARD Summer, and in November, he headlines three sold-out Palladium solo shows in Hollywood , those 10k tickets sold out in a day. With some many Latinos in the crowd, and so few in the booth, it’s easy to see why he’s connecting.

With this seismic shift under way, there’s a large theme to examine, the Latino legacy in SoCal rave culture.

Richard Vission: A longtime Los Angeles house DJ, producer and Powertools host, bringing the perspective of an artist who helped carry dance music between clubs, radio and wider audiences.

Bolo: A contemporary Mexican American DJ and producer, and mainstage superstar, whose Latin house sound draws on his Chicano upbringing and has broken through to engage with a brand new generation of Latino ravers on a scale never achieved before.

DJ Irene: A pioneering Latina DJ associated with Hollywood’s Arena and Circus. Her connection to Latino and queer club communities would anchor the discussion of belonging, women behind the decks and the scene’s cultural memory.

Doc Martin: A pioneering house DJ and producer who emerged from San Francisco’s underground and became a fixture of Los Angeles’s rave scene, bringing decades of perspective on the communities and sounds that shaped West Coast dance music.
