Gio Chamba Drops Psychedelic Reboot of a Peruvian Classic Out Now

True to their sounds, Gio Chamba puts their own electronic cumbia spin on the classic song. The band comments, “This cover pulses with hypnotic grooves and swirling guitars that pay homage to the original while injecting it with a bold, modern twist. With its rich textures and driving percussion, the track bridges generations of tropical sound equally at home, on the dancefloor or in a cinematic slow-burn. Blending memory with motion and nostalgia with modernity, Houston duo Gio Chamba — Gio Alejandro and Coffee Guzman — return this summer with their new album Psychedelicacy. A transcontinental, intergenerational conversation in rhythm, the project is rooted in the psychedelic cumbia sound of 1970s Peru. Psychedelicacy both honors and reimagines the genre, drawing inspiration from pioneers like Los Destellos and Los Mirlos while propelling their legacy into futuristic digital soundscapes.

The origins of Psychedelicacy trace back to 2020, during the stillness of the early pandemic. What began as a guitar-forward Chicha side project took an unexpected turn. Gio recalls, "In 2021, I moved to Colorado to establish roots with my family and my son is born. Sometimes when he was 1 year old and learning to walk, I was on the couch with my computer and he falls over. I immediately got up to aid him, threw the computer on the couch, causing my hard drive to unplug and hit the ground. I ended up losing all of the recordings I had made for this project."

Rather than letting the setback end the vision, Gio found renewed momentum through Svani Quintanilla (also known as Principe Q, nephew to the late Tejano icon Selena and album’s co-producer). What followed was a cross-city collaboration: Gio writing and arranging in Colorado Springs, Svani co-producing and adding organ and electronic textures in San Antonio, and Coffee laying down congas in Houston. A new chapter was born from that moment of disruption.

He adds, “I also think that Psychedelicacy shows an evolution from our early work and solidifies the guitar as one of my voices and carriers of a message, which is of love and peace.”
