30th anniversary of the iconic festival from 5 to 7 June 2015 at Mendig airfield - the new venue of “Rock am Ring”
“We are the Ring” chanted 85,000 fans together with Marek Lieberberg when they said good bye to Nürburgring. A mere 30 km from the old venue, the creators and artistic producers of the iconic festival will now open a new chapter of their festival history. Mendig airfield in the Volcanic Eifel will be the new home of “Rock am Ring”. And this is where “Rock am Ring” will celebrate its 30th anniversary on the first weekend of June 2015. The huge green compound in the midst of a volcanic landscape can comfortably accommodate several open-air and tent stages as well as more than 85,000 festival fans. In addition, all visitors will be able to camp on the almost even terrain, a novelty in the history of major German festivals.
One of the decisive factors for Mendig was that all requirements and approvals for the festival could be ensured in a timely manner. “It was the unique character of the festival area and the enthusiasm, commitment and competence of the responsible parties that tipped the scale in favour of Mendig”, said Marek Lieberberg.
He also expressly thanked the municipality of Monchengladbach and its citizens for their extraordinary efforts. “I am deeply touched by the passion and enthusiasm shown to me in Monchengladbach.” It was unfortunate and quite incomprehensible that BImA as the party responsible for the letting backed down. Still, the JHQ in Monchengladbach remains in the focus for a potential festival venue in late summer.
Mendig lies in the east of the Eifel, a landscape formed by volcanoes, and is easily reached by car via Federal Motorway 61 and Federal Highways 256 and 262, as well as by train. Until 2007, Mendig airfield had been a training site for the German air force and was then converted to a civilian space. The almost 190 hectares large compound consists mostly of open lawns, which provide ideal festival grounds, while the stages can be built on firm ground.
In the opinion of the organizer, the site offers the potential to realize a festival of the future: spacious open-air grounds with excellent traffic connections, problem-free parking and camping in the immediate vicinity of the festival site, short walking distances between the stages and enough space to chill and relax – these are the advantages of “Rock am Ring” in Mendig.
“Free of restrictions with regard to space and topography, we will now be able to offer the fans an even better festival”, said Marek and Andre Lieberberg in their statement. “Rock am Ring” in Mendig is a quantum leap into new dimensions, regarding both what can be offered and how the festival can be orchestrated. Once the “Rock am Ring” fans have arrived at Mendig airfield, neither long walks nor even shuttles will be necessary as the camping grounds will be a central part of the festival area.
“Rock am Ring” at Mendig airfield and its festival twin “Rock im Park” in Nuremberg will take place from June 5 to 7, 2015. Advance ticket sales will start in October. Headliners and other bands will also be announced at the same time.
