Supergenius confirm details of their debut album, 'Supertired'

SUPERGENIUS is a Belgian-based four piece, who draw influence from indie and punk bands spanning the last three decades of alternative music. Today, they have confirmed details of their debut album, entitled Supertired, which will be released in April via a collaboration between Hypertension Records and Consouling Sounds.

Comprising of four middle aged white men, each teetering on the edge of a mid-life crisis, and with an eclectic collective back catalogue between them, SUPERGENIUS have been meeting monthly for the past two and a half years to collaborate and create. Staving off the purchase of motorbikes a little longer, in December 2014 the band released a 4-track EP which coincided with their live debut. Markedly different to the output of their other bands - Oathbreaker, Wiegedood, Rise and Fall, Beecher - SUPERGENIUS delves into the musical pool that shaped these guys' record collections and musical outlook.

Fans of related bands may have their interest piqued by SUPERGENIUS; they are warned against expecting anything particularly similar, but encouraged to explore the component parts that have led these gentlemen down this sonic pathway.

"I guess the lyrics are about self reflection, about everyday things and also some not-so everyday things," explains vocalist, Edward Godby, "And in terms of singing, well, I'm not angry enough about anything to shout my head off,and too old to pretend, even for a minute, that I am."

Whilst SUPERGENIUS are not likely to be winning accolades for being dangerous and edgy, there is still a distinct passion and energy contained within Supertired. And although far from being cathartic or abrasive, it is resolutely something the band felt compelled to create.

Bassist, Vincent Maes explains: "We all felt we needed to write, at a certain point in our lives, a record that is A. Not about kicking someone in the nuts because you hate them. B. Not about being absolutely miserable because you don’t have friends or C. Not about feeling shitty because you took too many drugs (or didn’t take any whatsoever).

"No, we wanted to write a poppy, kinda happy sounding record, that for some people will hopefully become one of those records that takes you back to a certain time and place. You know the way truly good records do. Put on the record five or ten years from now and it takes you right back to sitting in the car with your mates driving somewhere and you haven’t got a worry in the world. The songs are more "evolved", more work went into them, the production is nicer, we had more direction, more focus, everything is better."

Supertired was recorded by Hein Devos and SUPERGENIUS at De Kreun, Kortrijk, Belgium, and mixed by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden, San Francisco California, USA, before being mastered by Lewis Johns at The Ranch, Southampton, England.
