The By Gods Confront Route 91 Festival Terrorism Trauma On Fifth Album GOLDY Released 21st February 2020
Following a recent US headline tour, Nashville, Tennessee residents The By Gods today announce that their fifth album GOLDY will be released on 21st February 2020, with new single ‘Black Wave’ out now on all good digital service providers. Commenting on the new single, vocalist George Pauley says: “This is the first new music that we’ve put out since our last record, Move On, in 2017. Some terrible things happened right at the release of that record and everything just needed to be put on hold.”
What happened following the release of the band’s last album is not an easy subject to discuss. The By Gods had toured extensively throughout 2017, playing more than 100 dates across the US, all building up to their first ever UK tour in support of their fourth full-length record, Move On. The day before their flight left for London, singer and songwriter George Pauley was at the now-infamous Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, working as a videographer, when gunshots began to ring out. The incident is now known to have been the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the history of the United States.
“At first I thought it was fireworks—we all did. I just remember hiding under the table while the shots fired. There was this confusion. It seemed like it would never end,” remembers Pauley, of the event.
The band’s upcoming tour was cancelled, and it was time to stop and take a breath. Writing over 35 songs in an effort to reflect on and process an extremely difficult period of time, the trio reached back out to friend and grammy-nominated producer Alex Newport (Death Cab For Cutie, Bloc Party, At The Drive-In, City and Colour), distilling the abundance of demos down to 11 tracks born from the trauma.
“We worked through all of the songs together and went in to record a bunch of them,” explains Pauley. “Alex really pushed us to try new things in the studio and it was some very good therapy for me. We’re happy to finally be getting these songs out into the world.”
The resulting work is their fifth album, GOLDY—The By Gods’ most vulnerable and expansive work to date. Born from a potent blend of musings on small-town religion, experiencing a terrorist attack, and the ensuing depression and guilt, the new record is the sound of a band trying to come to terms with their own ever-changing and strange reality, pushing themselves out of their comfort zone to finally sculpt their own hard-won identity.
As a band, The By Gods possess a kind of effortless telepathy—a result of their 20 year long musical relationship and steady touring regimen. They have released four albums and numerous EPs to date, receiving international press acclaim from Noisey, Consequence of Sound, Impose Magazine, Clunk Magazine, CLASH, Vive Le Rock, Louder Than War and UPSET Magazine for their unique blend of garage, grunge, post-punk and alt-rock.
Further album details and live dates TBA.
New single ‘Black Wave’ is out now.
